About the role

As a Thermofluids Engineer within the Global Mechanical Systems Capability function, you will apply Fluids and Thermo-mechanical sub-skills to definition, analysis, validation, and verification activities for integrated power systems, sub-systems, and components. Your work will support AE engine programs in the Defense business, spanning capability acquisition, new product introduction, and in-service product support. You will collaborate within a Project Deployed IPT and with central engineering capability teams, operating in accordance with Rolls-Royce Management System (RRMS) policies and processes.

Responsibilities

  • Define requirements for thermo-fluid systems and thermo-mechanical analysis, ensuring accurate flow-down and capture of higher-level requirements for system, sub-system, and component modeling.
  • Integrate thermo-fluid systems through cross-functional collaboration to optimize deployment alongside complementary systems and components, working with Project Engineers, Validation and Verification Engineers, and program design and functional chiefs.
  • Perform technical analysis of thermo-fluid system functionality, temperature, and thermo-mechanical behavior at whole-engine, sub-system, and component levels using appropriate methods and tools, tailored to each stage of the product lifecycle.
  • Conduct verification and validation activities to ensure requirements are met, including test specification, model calibration against measured data, and uncertainty quantification.
  • Manage technical approval of thermofluid systems and modeling through certification/qualification, including process compliance, model auditing, and documentation approval within structured review processes.
  • Support in-service products through ongoing technical analysis, root-cause analysis, resolution, and modifications as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in STEM/Engineering with 1+ years’ experience in thermodynamics, gas dynamics, fluid mechanics, and/or engine design; or
  • Master’s degree in STEM/Engineering; or
  • PhD in STEM/Engineering.

  • Proactive, self-motivated, and customer-focused with the ability to work independently.
  • Experience in computer programming languages such as FORTRAN, Visual Basic, and/or C++.
  • Experience in heat transfer/thermals modeling and analysis.
  • Experience in gas turbine secondary air system, oil system, fuel system, or thermal management system design, modeling, and analysis.
  • Experience with Thermofluid Systems analysis tools (SPAN, SC03, AMESim, Simscape, Fluent, STAR-CCM+, NPSS, Simcenter).
  • Experience with workflow automation (Preliminary System Design and/or Component Design Systems).
  • Experience in gas-turbine engine development, production, overhaul test analysis, and troubleshooting.
