About the role
The Thermal-Hydraulics Test Engineer III supports the validation of thermal-hydraulic performance for safety-related and non-safety-related systems as part of the SMR-300 design certification and commercialization effort. This role serves as a recognized technical contributor within the testing organization and is responsible for leading major portions of complex test programs.
Responsibilities
- Develop test requirements, plans, procedures, specifications, data analysis methods, and technical reports that support design validation, model development, regulatory engagement, and commercialization of Holtec’s SMR technology.
- Mentor junior engineers, improve test methods and tools, and help establish robust practices for thermal-hydraulic test planning, execution, documentation, and data quality.
- Translate design, analysis, or licensing needs into test requirements, test plans, procedures, specifications, and acceptance criteria.
- Support on-site testing, extended test campaigns, commissioning activities, troubleshooting, and occasional travel.
Requirements
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or closely related discipline.
- 6 to 10 years of relevant engineering experience, preferably in laboratory testing, thermal-hydraulics, nuclear systems, fluid systems, heat transfer, or test engineering environments.
- Demonstrated experience planning, executing, and documenting engineering test programs.
- Experience interpreting engineering drawings, P&IDs, system descriptions, design specifications, and analysis requirements.
- Experience with thermal-hydraulic instrumentation, data acquisition systems, calibration practices, and data quality controls.
- Experience performing data reduction, analysis, uncertainty evaluation, visualization, and interpretation of engineering test data.
- Experience working in a QA-controlled, safety-related, or highly regulated engineering environment.
- Ability to independently resolve complex technical issues and provide timely, well-supported engineering recommendations.
- Experience with instrumentation selection for pressure, temperature, flow, level, differential pressure, heat flux, void fraction, or two-phase flow measurements.
- Experience applying relevant industry codes and standards to engineering design, test facility setup, instrumentation, equipment selection, or test execution.
Preferred Qualifications
- M.S. or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or closely related discipline.
- Experience with nuclear thermal-hydraulic testing, separate-effects testing, integral-effects testing, component testing, or system-level validation testing.
- Experience with test loop or facility design, setup, commissioning, operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
- Familiarity with scaling analysis, similarity criteria, thermal-hydraulic phenomena identification, and test matrix development.
- Proficiency with Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW, or similar tools for data acquisition, reduction, automation, analysis, and visualization.
- Experience applying standards such as ASME B31.1/B31.3, ASME BPVC, ASME PTC, IEEE, ISA, or related industry standards in a test, laboratory, nuclear, or regulated engineering environment.
- Familiarity with NQA-1 quality assurance requirements and U.S. NRC licensing processes.
- Experience preparing design verification documentation, validation reports, test readiness reviews, and licensing-supporting technical documentation.
- Experience interfacing directly with internal or external test sponsors, vendors, laboratories, or regulatory stakeholders.
- Experience leading small engineering teams within larger test programs.
- Experience mentoring junior engineers or developing technical training materials.
