Responsibilities

  • Observes, records, and reports to supervisor the condition, reactions, and responses related to assigned duties.
  • Acts as an assistant to the occupational therapist, and carries out assigned duties as delegated.
  • Plans occupational therapy activities previously designed to assist individual clients to regain or maintain physical and psychological function and to assist client adjustment to disability.
  • Tests client’s abilities by conducting assigned standardized tests or evaluations, and by recording results in order to convey information for evaluation purposes.
  • Guides and encourages client to develop higher level or maturation by arranging activities typical of normal development continuum, and by adding behavioral modification.
  • Guides and modifies behavior of client demonstrating psychological dysfunction by participating in interpersonal social group sessions, providing task- or work-oriented group activities, and by suggesting client activities outside institutional setting.
  • Instructs clients in methods of self-care, housekeeping, and childcare tasks by demonstrating such tasks as grooming, feeding, dressing, cooking, or cleaning, using principles of work simplification, substitute motions, and assistive devices.
  • Trains clients on prevocational basis by evaluating work potential, such as work habits, work skills, work tolerance levels, teaching skills, and supervising practice to prepare for vocational training to enhance client employability in sheltered setting.
  • Reports client responses to supervisor; documents evaluation, implementation, and integration of treatment or training and client progress by writing and distributing reports, or by reporting verbally to promote communication, to evaluate progress, and to maintain legal and financial records.
  • Trains parents and school personnel on implementation of therapy.
  • Supports several sites, requiring travel between sites, as needed.
  • Orders materials/equipment; maintains inventory as necessary.
  • Performs any other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current certification as a Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant (COTA).
  • Current registration as an Occupational Therapist (OTR) or Registered Nurse (RN).
  • Experience working with individuals with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of occupational therapy techniques and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients, families, and colleagues.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
