Therapeutic Activities Specialist
About the role
Supports and develops life skills and personal enrichment through meaningful and productive leisure and recreational activities. Activities include games, cooking, arts and crafts, and gardening in our greenhouse. Designs and provides direct and consultative day services to persons served, developing structured, meaningful, and enriching activities to teach life skills and promote personal development.
Responsibilities
- Develops active treatment programs using music, art, horticulture, health and wellness, and multi-sensory experiences.
- Plans and conducts individual and group sessions to enhance skills.
- Gathers necessary materials and develops a curriculum to teach skills in specific areas.
- Aids program staff in encouraging and increasing individual participation.
- Aids in the development of treatment-specific goals and objectives, when appropriate.
- Prompts and assists individuals in achieving goals, fostering independence and competency.
- Aids program management in designing functional strategies and identifying adaptive equipment.
- Provides suggestions for enhancing functional and cognitive abilities, identifies barriers, and recommends accommodations.
- Documents professionally, efficiently, and in compliance with policies, creating progress reports, session notes, treatment summary reports, etc.
Requirements
- High school diploma and 6 months related experience required.
- Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Education, or a related field preferred.
- Prior experience working with individuals diagnosed with a developmental disability/autism preferred.
Qualifications
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Knowledge of developmental disabilities and therapeutic activities.
- Experience with documentation and report writing.
