The Troubling Physician Shortage

The physician shortage is a growing concern due to several factors:

• Pandemic pressures leading to burnout and early retirement among healthcare workers.
• Average age of physicians in the U.S. approaching 65, with a projected shortage of 139,000 physicians by 2033.
• Decrease in new healthcare workers entering the field, and aging of specialty physicians.
• Increased paperwork requirements for doctors, affecting their workload and morale.

To mitigate this issue, the federal government plans to increase medical education funding and explore alternative models such as allowing advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) and physician assistants (PAs) to perform more medical care. Additionally, efforts are being made to attract more immigrant doctors to the U.S. However, the core challenge remains addressing the high workload and stress faced by physicians.
