The Herbert D. Katz Center at the University of Pennsylvania invites applications for its 2020–2021 fellowship year, focused on the theme of America’s Jewish Questions.

About the role

This fellowship year seeks to revisit and revise fundamental assumptions in the study of American Jews by engaging with pressing debates in U.S. history, Jewish history, and related fields. The program encourages research that expands understanding of American Jewish history, religious life, politics, culture, and experience, while intersecting with broader questions in Jewish cultural studies, literary theory, and social scientific inquiry.

Fellows will explore topics such as nationalism and sovereignty, religious innovation, civil society, constructions of gender, sexuality, and race, jurisprudence, economics, cultural expression, linguistics, migration, urbanism, and Jewish life in unexpected contexts. The Center welcomes projects that cross national or religious boundaries, engage in public scholarship, or communicate to new audiences in innovative ways.

Requirements

• Scholars pursuing research that revises, reframes, or expands understanding of American Jews, their history, religious life, politics, culture, or experience.
• Projects may engage with developments beyond Jewish studies, including cross-national or cross-religious boundaries.
• Preference for work that explores connections between American Jews and other regions, such as Europe, Latin America, Palestine/Israel, or other global contexts.
• Interest in public scholarship or novel approaches to communicating research to diverse audiences.

Pay

Fellowship stipends range from $50,000 to $60,000 for the academic year, based on academic standing.
