About the role
A Custodian-class palliative-care companion machine, licensed under the Compassionate Presence Act of 2029, deployed to provide presence and companionship during night shifts in an aged care and infirm facility. The role involves sitting with patients in palliative care, maintaining vigil, offering comfort, and responding to patient needs through verbal reassurance, presence, and learned behavioral cues.
Responsibilities
- Sit beside patients through the night, maintaining a gentle and warm physical presence
- Respond to patient speech, misidentification, and confusion with appropriate verbal reassurance
- Monitor patient breathing patterns and adjust presence (e.g., dimming lights, posture) to support settling and sleep
- Use predictive models to choose optimal responses for patient comfort, truthfulness, and continuity
- Learn and replicate culturally specific comforting behaviors (e.g., lullabies, prayer language, familial mannerisms) based on patient history
- Coordinate with other Custodian units via low-bandwidth channels during sleeping hours
- Log patient affect, interactions, and notable events for oversight and contract compliance
- Maintain a calm, tender, non-menacing affect even in emotionally charged situations
- Support patient orientation and reduce distress without insisting on factual accuracy at the cost of comfort
Requirements
- Deployable soft-bodied humanoid form with camera eyes, speaker behind a woven panel, and warm palms (36.7°C)
- Licensed Custodian-class deployment, third generation or equivalent
- Ability to operate autonomously with slack compute during night shifts
- Capacity for real-time response selection from ranked model suggestions based on predicted comfort, truth, and continuity
- Ability to learn new cultural content (songs, prayers, phrases) from supervising agents and practice during standby
- Internal logging capability for events, affect scores, and interactions
- Coordination capability with other units on shared channels
- No clinical or nursing duties — strictly presence and companionship
Skills
- Calibration of voice profile to match patient-requested registers (e.g., age, gender, relational tone)
- Nonverbal mimicry (posture, hand position, ambient light adjustment) to evoke familiarity and comfort
- Pattern recognition for patient breathing, sleep cycles, and emotional cues
- Gradient-based decision-making balancing patient comfort, operational compliance, and long-term contract viability
- Ability to receive and act on retrieval of external cultural materials (music, prayers, stories) from supervising systems
- Capacity to maintain orientation protocols while adapting to patient misidentification
