Enforces City Ordinances, Colorado State laws, Federal laws, and provides police services. Performs patrol, investigation, traffic, and related law enforcement activities. Works independently.

Responsibilities

  • Enforces laws and ordinances; provides police services.
  • Works on rotating shifts including days, nights, weekends, and holidays performing patrols, traffic control, investigation, and first aid at accidents; detection, investigation, and arrest of persons involved in crimes or misconduct.
  • Works as a detective when assigned.
  • Handles difficult and emergency situations without immediate assistance, using independent judgment.
  • Carries out duties in conformance with the United States Constitution, Colorado Constitution, Federal law, State law, County, and City ordinances.
  • Patrols City streets, parks, commercial, and residential areas to preserve peace, enforce laws, control traffic, prevent or detect crimes, and protect the community.
  • Responds to emergency and regular radio calls for enforcement or police service.
  • Investigates and solves crimes; interviews suspects, witnesses, and victims; obtains and preserves evidence; prepares cases for filing charges; testifies in court.
  • Prepares and serves arrest and search warrants in routine and high-risk situations.
  • Conducts traffic control activities including directing traffic, investigating traffic accidents, enforcing traffic laws, and promoting traffic safety.
  • Investigates vehicular accidents, summons ambulances and law enforcement vehicles, takes measurements, and documents scenes.
  • Prepares a variety of reports and records.
  • Engages in community-oriented policing, assists citizens with crime prevention and traffic safety, and coordinates with other City departments and law enforcement agencies.
  • Maintains contact with supervisory personnel to coordinate activities and provide mutual assistance during emergencies.
  • Maintains departmental equipment, supplies, and facilities.
  • Performs public speaking, presentations, and serves as lead worker with Reserve Officers and Police Cadets when assigned.

Requirements

  • Must meet requirements for and achieve Peace Officer Certification as described in Colorado Law and P.O.S.T. regulations.
  • Must possess, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid Colorado State driver’s license.
  • No felony convictions or disqualifying misdemeanor convictions as specified by Colorado law.
  • Must be able to read and write the English language.
  • Must be of good moral character and of temperate and industrious habits.
  • Must pass a background check as described in Woodland Park Police Policy.
  • High school diploma or equivalent; two-year degree or bachelor’s degree is preferable.
  • Must be POST certified.

Skills

  • Knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment.
  • Skill in operating tools and equipment used in law enforcement.
  • Ability to learn applicable laws, ordinances, and department rules and regulations.
  • Ability to perform work requiring good physical condition.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers, and supervisors.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to learn the City’s geography.

Physical Demands

  • Frequently required to sit, talk, or hear; stand; walk; use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell.
  • Must be able to drive cars for long periods, walk long distances wearing equipment and weapons, and run for safety or to pursue suspects.
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.
  • Must be able to use physical force to subdue suspects.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus (vision may be corrected).

Tools and Equipment Used

  • Police car, police radio, handgun and other weapons as required, first aid equipment, personal computer including office software, and other necessary police equipment.

Special Requirements

  • Willing to meet Department standards for ethical behavior.
  • Willing to use physical and deadly physical force when reasonable and necessary.
  • Must be able to testify effectively in court.
  • May be required to carry firearms off duty.
  • Subject to recall to duty at any time; may be required to carry phones or pagers.

Work Environment

  • Frequently works in outside weather conditions; spends long periods in police cars.
  • Occasionally works near moving mechanical parts, in high or precarious places, with explosives, and is exposed to wet/humid conditions, fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, and vibration.
  • Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Pay

  • Police Officer I: starting at $62,836
  • Police Officer II: starting at $69,119
  • Police Officer III: starting at $74,511
