Test Engineer III – Motion Control, Honeybee Robotics (EGSE & Test Software)

Blue Origin · Longmont, CO · 3 wk ago
On-siteEngineering$111k–$155k/yrFull-time

About the role

This role is part of the Motion Control Business Unit, Honeybee Robotics which designs, manufactures, and tests high-performance, reliable motion control components and integrated solutions that power the most demanding aerospace and space exploration missions.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and validate Electrical Ground Support Equipment (EGSE) and automated test equipment (ATE), hardware and software, used to electrically interface with power, command, stimulate, and measure GNC components and Solar Array Drive Assemblies (SADAs) in support of the Blue Ring and TeraWave programs.
  • Develop test software and automated test sequences (primarily LabVIEW; Python as applicable) to command EGSE/ATE, orchestrate test execution, and collect, analyze, and report measurement data with real-time monitoring.
  • Define EGSE/ATE electrical interfaces and develop interface control documents (ICDs) in coordination with design, GNC, and systems engineering.
  • Author, review, and maintain test plans, test procedures, and test reports in compliance with applicable standards and program requirements.
  • Conduct functional, performance, life, and environmental testing (vibration, thermal vacuum, shock, EMI/EMC) on flight and qualification hardware.
  • Integrate instrumentation, data acquisition, and control systems into EGSE/ATE racks; develop calibration and validation routines for test equipment with electrical and digital test interfaces.
  • Collect, reduce, and analyze test data; identify anomalies, root causes, and corrective actions; and communicate findings clearly to engineering and project teams.
  • Support troubleshooting and fault isolation of EGSE/ATE and articles under test, using electrical schematics and wiring diagrams to resolve technical issues during test campaigns.
  • Operate and maintain test laboratory equipment, including motor controllers, torque sensors, encoders, load cells, and multi-channel data acquisition systems.
  • Implement version control (Git) and software development best practices for test software supporting development and production test.
  • Support test readiness reviews (TRRs), test anomaly investigations, and failure review boards (FRBs).
  • Maintain accurate test logs, configuration records, and traceability documentation in accordance with quality management system requirements.
  • Collaborate closely with design, systems, and quality engineers and customers to ensure test requirements are properly derived, allocated, and verified.
  • Identify opportunities to improve test efficiency, repeatability, and automation; contribute to continuous improvement of test infrastructure and processes.
  • Interface with customers, suppliers, and external test facilities as required to support program milestones.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including tasks or projects outside the primary scope of this role as needed to support evolving program, test, and business priorities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics or a closely related technical discipline.
  • Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in hardware testing, with demonstrated experience developing Electrical Ground Support Equipment (EGSE) or automated test equipment (ATE).
  • Professional proficiency with at least one programming language (e.g., LabVIEW, Python, C#) is required.
  • Extensive LabVIEW experience, including state machines, queues, and hardware integration.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and develop electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and interface control documents to support EGSE/ATE stand-up and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with data acquisition systems and instrumentation (e.g., load cells, torque sensors, encoders, thermocouples, accelerometers, voltage/current measurement).
  • Experience with hardware/test equipment integration via communication protocols (e.g., VISA, GPIB, Ethernet, RS-232/422).
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret test data, identify anomalies, and drive resolution through structured problem-solving methods.
  • Familiarity with environmental test standards such as MIL-STD-810, GEVS (GSFC-STD-7000), or equivalent aerospace qualification standards.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly document and present technical findings.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a cross-functional team environment.

Qualifications

  • U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Skills

  • Professional proficiency with at least one programming language (e.g., LabVIEW, Python, C#).
