Test Automation & Process Engineer
Vertiv is seeking a Test Automation & Process Engineer for the Test Engineering team in Delaware, Ohio. This role focuses on automating data collection, creating analysis tools, and standardizing workflows to improve team efficiency and knowledge sharing.
About the role
This is not a typical test-automation job. You will not write software-QA frameworks, Selenium suites, or RPA bots, nor will you spend your days running electrical tests. Instead, you will:
- Build systems to collect data from laboratory meters and instruments such as precision power analyzers, oscilloscopes, and related measurement equipment.
- Create analysis tools—often using AI-assisted development tools like Cursor—to interpret electrical test results.
- Turn the team’s knowledge into simple, standard workflows using knowledge-management and AI-assisted tools.
The role is internally called a Process Engineer, emphasizing automation, tooling, and usable knowledge. You will work in a high-power electrical laboratory and are expected to prioritize safety, integrity, and hard work.
Responsibilities
- Automate test data collection: Build and maintain automated capture from precision power analyzers, oscilloscopes, power meters, data loggers, and probes. Interface over Ethernet, USB, GPIB, or serial using SCPI and standard instrument libraries. Replace manual processes (e.g., screenshots, USB file pulls) with clean, time-stamped datasets tied to units and tests. Ensure long-duration logging is reliable enough to run unattended.
- Build analysis tools: Transform raw data into engineering insights—efficiency, power quality, harmonics, transients, thermal performance, and pass/fail evaluations. Use AI-assisted development tools like Cursor to ship software quickly. Ensure tools are self-service, version-controlled, documented, and supported—not one-off scripts.
- Make the work easy to follow: Write clear standard work and simple workflows for setup, data collection, analysis, and reporting. Capture institutional knowledge in searchable, well-structured knowledge bases using AI-assisted tools. Train team members on the tools you develop.
- Work safely and collaboratively: Follow PPE, lockout/tagout, and lab safety rules without exception. Surface problems early, including your own. Partner with test engineers and technicians to translate their pain points into usable tools.
Requirements
- B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field with 3+ years of relevant experience; or an A.S. with 5+ years; or equivalent demonstrated experience.
- Proof of building automation or data-acquisition software. You will be asked to walk through a project you’ve completed and its impact.
- Proficiency in Python (or comparable languages) for instrument control, data processing, and analysis.
- Experience controlling laboratory instruments programmatically over LAN, USB, GPIB, or serial.
- Enough electrical-test knowledge to read schematics and collaborate effectively with test engineers.
- Willingness and discipline to work safely in a high-power electrical laboratory.
- Clear writing skills. Procedures you create must be easily followed by others.
- Self-directed. Identify friction points, prove solutions, and roll them out.
Preferred Qualifications
- Hands-on experience with precision power analyzers, oscilloscopes, and power-quality meters (Yokogawa and Fluke preferred).
- Familiarity with SCPI, VISA/PyVISA, LabVIEW, or similar instrument-control frameworks.
- Background in power electronics, UPS, switchgear, transformers, energy storage, or power-quality measurement.
- Experience building engineering tools with AI-assisted development environments (e.g., Cursor).
- Experience standing up or curating engineering knowledge bases, document repositories, or AI-assisted search/Q&A for technical teams.
- Proficiency with Git and a habit of documenting your work.
- Practical experience with Lean or continuous improvement—not just certification.
How We Expect You To Work
- Safety first: Lab rules are non-negotiable.
- Integrity: Tell the truth and raise issues early.
- Hard work: Write the software, pull the cable, and stay until it works. Document it so others can use it.
- Build for the team: Your success is measured by how much faster the team becomes, not by what only you can do.
Physical and Work Environment
Split between a desk and an active high-power electrical test laboratory. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and stand or walk for extended periods. PPE and safety training provided. Travel up to 5-10%.
