About the Role

Reporting to the Terminal Manager, the Terminal Operator is responsible for safely operating all Terminal equipment in connection with receiving, storing, transferring, and loading of liquid bulk products via trucks, pipeline, rail cars, water vessels or tanks. This position is safety-sensitive and subject to DOT Drug and Alcohol Testing Requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safe operation of the terminal; maintain awareness for personal and co-workers safety, and ensure knowledge and compliance with all policies and procedures.
  • Perform gauging of storage tanks, temperature readouts, and obtaining product samples.
  • Perform all daily, monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, and annual maintenance and compliance inspections, and maintain required logs as appropriate.
  • Complete daily meter readings for all products and calculate/input all product inventories and meter readings into appropriate systems.
  • Ensure that all Terminal equipment, including safety devices and systems, are functioning properly; report any equipment failures to supervisor.
  • Perform daily walk-around inspections to identify potential risks and ensure good housekeeping standards.
  • Conduct preventive and routine maintenance on various operating equipment (pumps, valves, meters, compressors, motors, tanks, pipes, etc.).
  • Calibrate and adjust all additive injection systems as required.
  • Perform basic testing of oils (viscosity, A.P.I., flash) when necessary.
  • Complete required additive Volumetric Additive Reconciliation documentation monthly.
  • Take product samples, perform Quality Control tests, and maintain Product Quality Log.
  • Issue work permits to contractors, ensuring compliance with safety requirements (pre-job meetings, lockout-tagout, confined space entry, gas tech monitoring).
  • Ensure contractors, customers, and vendors follow Company/Terminal Policies and Procedures.
  • Communicate product outages and equipment downtime to appropriate individuals.
  • Participate in emergency situations as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (required).
  • Industry experience (preferred).
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential Card (TWIC).

Skills

  • Strong team player with the ability to work independently.
  • General knowledge of steam boilers, hot oil heaters, loading racks, product blenders, and automation systems.
  • Basic computer and Microsoft Office experience; experience with terminal automation software (e.g., Toptech) preferred.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations with or without a calculator.
  • Ability to work outside for long periods in any weather condition.
  • Ability to work overtime, flexible schedule (evenings, weekends, holidays).
  • Excellent customer service, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude.

Physical Requirements

  • Normal physical mobility, including heavy lifting, heights, bending, stooping, climbing, and working with hand tools.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and move across large areas (including uneven terrain) quickly.
  • Normal physical agility to maneuver body while in place.
  • Normal physical strength to handle 90-pound objects (frequency considered); ability to lift 75 lbs. regularly.
  • Ability to use up to 100 ft./lbs. of force to operate cycling valves.
  • Must be able to climb heights in excess of 60’, ascend stairs/ladders, work atop tanks, traverse metal walkways at heights.
  • May work in confined or restricting spaces (e.g., tanks, between compressors, vessels).
  • Normal dexterity of hands and fingers; coordination (eye-hand, hand-foot).
  • Normal endurance, concentration/intensity (prolonged mental effort with limited breaks).
  • Normal memory, decision-making ability under pressure.
  • Normal senses (sight, color distinction, hearing, smell, taste, touch).
  • Maintenance tasks may require awkward positions (bending, reaching, lying on back, replacing long stretches of loading hose).

Working Environment

  • Regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions, temperature extremes, cramped spaces, loud noises, chemicals/fumes, dust, and heights.
  • Regularly exposed to work in high, precarious places.
  • Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, hand tools, and small/medium-sized power tools.
