About the Role

The Department of Theatre and Visual Arts at Fordham University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor in Theatre Design at the Lincoln Center campus beginning in Fall 2027. Fordham’s Theatre Program engages across a broad spectrum of embodied practices and rigorous study within four areas of concentration: Design and Production, Performance, Directing, and Playwriting. We seek a collaborative artist-educator with expertise in theatre design.

The Design and Production Concentration houses students in the set, light, sound, costume, and stage management concentrations. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to teach across multiple areas of theatrical design. Experience teaching and/or professional practice in lighting and sound design is also highly desirable. Applicants with exceptional qualifications in a single design area who demonstrate a commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration and teaching across the curriculum are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

• Teach undergraduate courses in theatre design.
• Mentor student designers.
• Contribute to developing an innovative, inclusive, and forward-looking curriculum that prepares students for contemporary artistic practice.
• Serve as a resident designer for the department, designing at least one mainstage production each academic year.
• Supervise student-designed Main Stage and Studio productions.

Requirements

• Terminal degree (MFA or PhD, as appropriate to the discipline) required by the time of appointment.
• 3-5 years of college-level teaching and professional experience.
• Demonstrated successful teaching and mentorship experience in academic or studio environments.
• Ability to contribute to curriculum development for theatre studies in a liberal arts environment.
• Demonstrated collaboration and leadership skills, including excellent written and oral communication, effective management skills, and innovation and follow-through.
• Demonstrated leadership in areas contributing to diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as a commitment to advancing these principles and the principles of Jesuit education within the Department and the School of Arts & Sciences.

• Commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching and mentorship.
• Ability to maintain an active professional practice while engaging in scholarly and/or creative work appropriate for a tenure-track appointment.

Pay

$98,526 to $105,000
