The Department of Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania seeks a tenure-track assistant professor in sociology. The position is open to all areas of sociology and begins July 1, 2027.

About the role

The department is a national leader in the discipline, continuing to push the boundaries of social science. Housed within the School of Arts & Sciences, the department supports interdisciplinary research and collaboration, leveraging resources across Penn’s contiguous urban campus in Philadelphia. Key resources include the Population Studies Center, Population Aging Research Center, Offices of the Vice Provost for Faculty and Vice Provost for Research, Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Innovation, and the Penn Center for Undergraduate Research and Fellowships.

The department offers undergraduate majors and minors in sociology, medical sociology, and law and society, as well as graduate training programs in sociology and demography.

Responsibilities

  • Teach and mentor graduate and undergraduate students
  • Direct graduate and undergraduate research

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in sociology or related field completed by July 1, 2027
  • Strong research potential
  • Capacity for teaching at both graduate and undergraduate levels
  • Ability to direct graduate and undergraduate research
