Established in 1983, San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program, Inc. (SDVLP) is the oldest and most comprehensive pro bono legal services program in San Diego County. SDVLP's mission is to provide equal access to the justice system by serving as a bridge between indigent and other disadvantaged people in San Diego County and the volunteer lawyers who donate their time and resources.
About the role
SDVLP is seeking a part-time Staff Attorney for our Microbusiness and Nonprofit Support Program (MNSP), which provides top-quality legal assistance and education to low-income entrepreneurs and microbusinesses in San Diego County, and to nonprofit organizations that serve low-income and disadvantaged San Diegans. The MNSP Staff Attorney will provide legal counsel and assistance to small businesses and nonprofit organizations on transactional matters, work closely with SDVLP's pro bono team to recruit pro-bono attorneys experienced in business law, place clients with attorneys for pro bono representation, perform community outreach and legal education, and supervise the work of non-attorney staff.
Responsibilities
- Mentor, train, and supervise pro bono attorneys
- Recruit new pro bono attorney volunteers through community outreach and networking events
- Develop and maintain written training materials for pro bono attorneys
- Coordinate clinics with community partners to assist low-income entrepreneurs and nonprofit organizations
- Train and supervise non-attorney staff
- Manage and compile statistical data
- Assist with drafting narrative reports to funding sources and ensure grant deliverables are met
- Engage in other tasks and projects as needed to further SDVLP's mission
Requirements
- Member in good standing of the California Bar
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent mentorship and teaching skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, and with the public, volunteers, court personnel, government agencies, and partner organizations
- Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments with accuracy and minimal direction
- Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as required by events and deadlines
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint
- Demonstrated commitment to serving low-income and disadvantaged people
- Ability to occasionally travel to SDVLP's other offices throughout San Diego County, as necessary
Pay
$40.00 hourly
Schedule
- Part-time, 20-hour work week
- Temporary for a minimum of three (3) months, with the possibility of extension
- Onsite position based in downtown San Diego
