MnDOT District 6 may fill up to 32 temporary and/or emergency snowplow operator positions at the Transportation Generalist or Transportation Associates classifications in various district truck stations throughout the district. These positions will be filled in the following locations: Albert LeaAustinDresbachOwatonnaRed WingRochesterStewartvilleWinona During a snow & ice season a snowplow shift is typically an A shift (12:00am-12:00pm) or B shift (12:00pm-12:00am); an employee may be asked to work more than an 8-hour shift depending on the length of the snow event. Temporary employees may work full-time or part-time (2-5 days, M-F, 7:00am - 3:30pm) or they work a snow & ice shift; snow & ice shifts can occur on regularly scheduled workdays and scheduled days off, including Saturday and Sunday. Emergency employees are intermittent fill in drivers; they work a snow & ice shift, filling in for regular operators who are not available. Hours of work may include overtime, various shifts depending on emergency situations and will include working nights, weekends and holidays. Incumbents must have immediate access to a phone and be able to report to work within one-hour of being called. Function: Snow and Ice Maintains roadways for snow and ice control Prepares and inspects winter equipment Performs preseason snow route inspection and performs post storm cleanup Performs winter stockpile setup and transfer of anti-icing and de-icing chemicals Performs all work related to installing, repairing, maintaining, and removing snow fences; replacing mailboxes Maintain documentation on snow and ice data for accurate reporting of inventory and resource management Performs traffic control set-ups and/or provides notification to dispatch of disabled vehicles New employees must pass a pre-placement drug test for evidence of use of marijuana, cocaine, opiates, phencyclidine (PCP) and amphetamines (MDMA, MDA and MDEA) and acetyl morphine (6-AM). A revoked, suspended or canceled Driver's License within the last five (5) years may disqualify a candidate or three (3) serious traffic violations during any 12-month period of time will disqualify a candidate. Minimum Qualifications Transportation Generalist Minimum Qualifications: Must possess a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with no Airbrake Restriction or equivalent from another state and obtain a valid Class A CDL with no Airbrake Restriction and Tanker Endorsement within 6 months of initial placement into the position and maintain it as a condition of employment. (May be required to obtain a Tanker Endorsement sooner than 6 months). The incumbent in this position will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Individuals not currently in the random testing pool must pass a preplacement drug test for evidence of use of marijuana, cocaine, opiates, phencyclidine (PCP), amphetamines (MDMA, MDA and MDEA) and acetyl morphine (6-AM). The incumbent must also be registered in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Commercial Driver's License Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse. Exam Part 1: The level of experience to perform this job at the TG level can be achieved with: Experience: One (1) year of experience performing activities in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities (roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, commercial landscaping, operating heavy equipment, or farm experience). OR Education Substitution: Successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (of at least 60 semester credits; or 90 quarter credits) will substitute for one year of experience. (In order for education coursework to be considered in lieu of work experience you must submit a copy of your transcripts). AND Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak, and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records. Physical Requirements The physical demands of this job will vary but typically requires lifting 100 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects such as 50-pound bags. This job also may require walking or standing to a significant degree on rough terrain or may involve sitting most of the time with pushing and pulling of arm and/or let controls. This job will require strenuous manual labor including but not limited to digging, shoveling, hauling, crawling, bending, pushing, pulling and climbing. Weather elements: May require frequent exposure to weather elements (cold and hot) on a daily basis.
