About the role

The Field Botanist is responsible for conducting vegetation surveys and assessments, including field work, taxon identification, data management, and related tasks. Depending on time constraints, responsibilities may also include seed imaging and flow cytometry of select accessions.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct vegetation surveys and assessments in the southeastern United States, including North Carolina and nearby states.
  • Perform field work under conditions of high humidity, heat, mosquitoes, and common natural hazards.
  • Manage and analyze vegetation data.
  • Conduct seed imaging and flow cytometry of select accessions, if applicable.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated understanding of natural hazards and ability to work safely in the field in the southeastern US Coastal Plain.
  • Demonstrated success working independently.
  • Demonstrated plant identification skills through formal coursework in local flora, dendrology, plant taxonomy, or related fields, or significant work experience requiring plant identification skills.
  • Experience in vegetation assessment/survey.
  • Experience in managing vegetation data.

Qualifications

  • Training and experience required to perform the duties.

Skills

  • Understanding of natural hazards and ability to work safely in the field in the southeastern US Coastal Plain.
  • Success working independently.
  • Plant identification skills through formal coursework or significant work experience.
