About the role
The person taking this position will support research on developing novel gene drive systems for suppression of the New World screwworm. Their main duties will be rearing fly strains, which will involve cleaning cages, preparing diet, setting cages, collecting eggs and setting larval cultures, autoclaving waste, obtaining supplies, checking fly traps and working on other tasks to support research of the senior staff working on the project.
Responsibilities
- Rearing fly strains, including cleaning cages, preparing diet, setting cages, collecting eggs, and setting larval cultures
- Autoclaving waste and obtaining supplies
- Checking fly traps and supporting other research tasks
- Maintaining accurate laboratory notebooks
- Following all lab safety requirements and requirements for 20-containment of genetically modified insects
Requirements
- 4-year degree or equivalent combination of training and/or related experience
- Ability to work with insects and use microscopes
- Valid driver’s license
- Valid NC driver’s license
Schedule
20–40 hours per week, up to 8 hours per day on selected days per week.
Pay
Anticipated hiring range: $20–$22 per hour.
