Temporary Research & Instruction Assistant Librarian 2026-27
Temporary full-time Assistant Librarian position in the San Diego State University Library pool. Applications are welcomed from candidates with expertise or experience in reference, research services, and instruction.
About the role
This position supports students and faculty through in-person and online reference, research services, and instruction. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills; a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; and experience with public service, teaching, and library research.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a general reference librarian at the reference desk.
- Provide in-person and online LibChat reference services, including undergraduate and graduate-level research consultations.
- Supervise and train student workers assisting at the reference desk and online LibChat reference services.
- Conduct course-related information literacy instruction for undergraduate courses, including required rhetoric and communications classes.
- Lead orientation tours for potential students, new students, and other groups.
- Review and update online research guides for ADA compliance.
- Perform other duties as needed.
Qualifications
- Required:
- ALA-accredited master’s degree or equivalent foreign degree.
- A demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity.
- Experience providing reference assistance and familiarity with reference tools.
- Desired:
- Experience teaching information literacy in a variety of disciplines.
- Experience in the development of online tutorials or web guides.
Pay
As of July 2024, the salary range for this position is $6,288 - $7,658 per month. Initial rank and salary are based on professional experience and educational background.

Schedule
Temporary full-time, 12-month appointments. Initial appointment typically ends on June 30, 2027, with renewal contingent on satisfactory evaluations and continuing availability of work. Applications remain active in the pool for the academic year in which they are submitted.
