About the role

Perform skilled journey-level work applying paints, coatings, and coverings to surfaces. Work is subject to inspection for neatness and efficiency. Functional contacts include co-workers, other service department employees, University staff, and students.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate area to be painted and determine type of paint, surface preparation steps, equipment needed, and environmental health procedures required.
  • Prepare area and surface: move furniture and fixtures, cover floors and furniture, set up ladders, scaffolding, or staging.
  • Perform surface preparation including filling holes, cracks, and joints; sandblasting; mechanical chipping or grinding; and burning.
  • Apply paints and coatings using brush, roller, spray, squeegee, or appropriate applicator; may apply wallpaper or fabric.
  • Select pre-mixed materials or prepare materials to match specified colors, textures, consistencies, and drying properties by mixing.
  • Provide suggestions regarding paint color, quality, cost, and plans.
  • Clean area upon completion, return materials and equipment, and restore area to original state.
  • Paint signs, cut stencils, etch surfaces, mark parking lot lines and curbs.
  • Assist with preparation of cost estimates, material orders, reports, and maintenance of records.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Schedule

Mid-May to Mid-August, Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Four years of work experience and training, including apprenticeship or vocational training in painting and wall covering.
  • Knowledge and skill in the maintenance and use of tools, equipment, and materials of the trade.
  • Ability to read blueprints, plans, drawings, and plumbing and electrical codes.
  • May be required to wear a respirator or self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) as outlined in the “Industrial Standard for Respirator Use.”
  • Good physical health and coordination; sufficient strength for heavy lifting and ability to work on ladders, scaffolding, and staging.

Pay

Anticipated hiring range: $18.00–$22.00 hourly. Salary is determined by education, skills, experience, and organizational requirements.

Benefits

This position is not eligible for University benefits. Individuals may choose to participate in the Tax Deferred Annuity Plan (403b).
