About the role

The Mendocino-Lake Community College District is currently accepting applications for a Short- Term, Non-Continuing Lab Technician for our Sustainable Construction Technology department. This is a short-term, non-continuing position.

Responsibilities

  • Aid in the setup, cleanup, and completion of projects in the lab setting of the Sustainable Construction Technology department.
  • Prepare and set up supplies; research some media; prepare and set up lab equipment;
  • Organize lab times; assure critical lead time for labs are maintained; troubleshoot experiments that failed during experiment process or through student errors; research new adopted experiments as directed;
  • Maintain laboratory supplies, materials, and equipment in a safe and orderly condition; clean lab after use; check and assure first aid kits are operational as required;
  • Complete periodic inventory of supplies; allocate priority to supplies needed; initiate requisitions for the purchase of supplies and equipment and submit to appropriate personnel for signature and approval;
  • Communicate with vendors and sales representatives; make cost comparisons and obtain technical information regarding equipment and instruments being considered for purchase; maintain budget records and petty cash;
  • Properly receive, store, and dispense supplies and equipment including hazardous chemicals; and be responsible for off-site disposal of hazardous wastes;
  • Assure safety in the labs; explain labeling and safety procedures; maintain current knowledge of proper handling of chemicals and maintain safety data files; assure proper handling of chemicals by students and disposal of hazardous materials;
  • Operate a variety of construction equipment; maintain and perform minor repairs of instruments;
  • Issue and check out student equipment; restock as necessary;
  • Serve as a resource for part-time instructors in the use of facilities, equipment, instruments, and supplies including safety regulations;
  • Communicate with inspectors and safety officers and explain the layout of facilities; inspect classrooms and storage facilities;
  • Attend meetings and workshops as directed;
  • Perform related duties as assigned by supervisor;

Qualifications

  • Must meet Human Resources guidelines for qualified hiring; including by not limited to a Live Scan background check and completion of TB test.
  • Knowledge of: Safe receiving, handling, and storage of supplies; proper operation and set up of lab equipment; safety procedures for a construction lab; classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct; basic instructional methods and techniques; basic recordkeeping techniques; basic computer operation; basic research methods in media preparation; interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Ability to: Prepare and set up labs, media, and supplies; learn curriculum, goals, and objectives of the program; organize and monitor critical lead times for labs; maintain laboratory and equipment in safe operating condition pursuant to safety regulations; perform maintenance and minor repairs on instruments; perform clerical duties related to classroom activities; operate and demonstrate the use of laboratory materials and equipment; work cooperatively with others; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; operate a equipment and related software; prioritize and schedule work; learn, apply, and explain policies, procedures, rules, and regulations related to the operation of the program; maintain current knowledge of technological advances in the field.
  • Physical Ability: Physical demands include reaching, bending, walking, moderate lifting (up to 50 lbs), standing for long periods, and the ability to handle and preserve live animals including a human cadaver.
