About the Role

The Tribal Historic Preservation Officer (THPO) advises Federal agencies on the management of Tribal historic properties and strives to preserve the Round Valley Indian Tribes’ cultural heritage and preservation programs.

This role requires strong verbal and written communication skills, a willingness to travel to project sites within traditional tribal territory, and the ability to represent the Round Valley Indian Tribes professionally. The THPO must establish and maintain effective relationships with Tribal staff, professional volunteers, outside agency personnel, and the general public.

Candidates must be able to work outside for long periods in various weather conditions and travel to remote sites. The position demands knowledge of local historic and prehistoric village sites, culture, religion, ceremony, and burial practices of the Round Valley Indian Tribes.

Responsibilities

• Advise Federal agencies on the management of Tribal historic properties.
• Preserve and manage the Tribe’s cultural heritage and preservation programs.
• Represent the Tribe professionally in interactions with agencies, volunteers, and the public.
• Gather information and develop recommendations to coordinate historic preservation and cultural resource management services.
• Demonstrate administrative capability in establishing and managing a Tribal historic preservation and cultural resource management department.
• Coordinate work efforts with other Tribal departments as needed.

Requirements

• Experience related to historic preservation and cultural resource management.
• Willingness to upgrade formal knowledge on a regular basis.
• Knowledge and understanding of the Tribal intent for historic preservation and cultural management program goals and objectives.
• Familiarity with regulations and standards of regulatory and credentialing groups relevant to historic preservation and cultural resource management.
• Ability to work outside for extended periods in various weather conditions and travel to remote sites.
• Demonstrated knowledge of local historic and prehistoric village sites, culture, religion, ceremony, and burial practices of the Round Valley Indian Tribes.

Schedule

Positions are part of a temporary labor pool with applications valid for one year from submission. Assignments may be full-time, part-time, or seasonal, based on department needs and Tribal Council approval. Openings are updated on an ongoing basis.
