About the role
This is a temporary appointment with a predetermined end date not to exceed 1 year and is subject to an earlier termination if necessary. Temporary employees have no entitlement or expectation of continued employment during or beyond the appointment period.
Responsibilities
- Respond to fire and other emergencies and provide basic life support and/or prevent property loss to NMSU Las Cruces campus and surrounding communities.
- Assist with inspections of buildings to ensure fire code/life safety compliance.
- Participate in any fire or EMS training as identified by Fire Chief.
- Keep up-to-date on equipment, protocols, and procedures.
- Participate in continuing education courses to maintain EMS licenses.
- Ensure that UTVs, fire apparatus, and passenger vehicles are response ready.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the department.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED certificate.
- 1 year of relevant experience.
Qualifications
- NM Emergency Medical Technician Basic license.
- NM Class E Driver’s license or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire date.
Preferred Qualifications
- NM Emergency Medical Technician Intermediate license or higher.
- IFSAC Firefighter I/II or equivalent, or ability to obtain within 1 year of hire date.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
- Environment: Moderate exposure to extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
- Physical Effort: Considerable physical activity; physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of the job.
- Lifting Requirements: Heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling of objects up to 50 pounds required.
- Risk: Exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations requiring extensive safety precautions and use of protective equipment.
