This position performs a variety of cleaning, housekeeping, and custodial duties in a hospital, clinic, hotel, or college campus environment. Responsibilities include cleaning buildings, offices, patient rooms, campus facilities, restrooms, lounges, dormitories, classrooms, auditoriums, sports facilities, hallways, exterior areas, and other designated spaces. Work may involve general maintenance across the UC Davis Campus, either independently or as part of a team, while ensuring building security.

Responsibilities

  • Perform custodial work, including cleaning and floor care using appropriate equipment.
  • Use cleaning solvents, soaps, waxes, and related chemicals safely and effectively.
  • Operate auto scrubbers, wet vacuums, upholstery shampoo machines, carpet extractors, and buffers to maintain floors and furniture.
  • Maintain building security by following procedures for unlocking, locking, and securing buildings and managing keys.
  • Resolve customer concerns in a timely and professional manner.
  • Follow all health, safety, and security policies and procedures.
  • Wear and maintain approved safety equipment such as gloves and eye protection.
  • Stoop, bend, walk, and stand for extended periods; lift materials weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Work at heights up to 10 feet using a ladder.
  • Work variable shifts, including weekends, holidays, and overtime, and float to other units/areas/buildings as needed.
  • Work alone in buildings, isolated areas, or high-traffic environments, including nighttime travel between buildings.
  • Handle hazardous materials and waste, including biohazard, pharmacy waste, and sharps.
  • Wear uniforms and/or protective clothing/gear as required.
  • Complete mandatory training, including HIPAA Privacy and Security training, within the first 15 days of employment.

Requirements

  • Skills in performing custodial work and/or operating floor care equipment.
  • Knowledge of basic materials and equipment used in custodial work.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Ability to follow health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Ability to learn and practice security procedures related to building access and key management.
  • Must be available for variable shifts, including weekends, holidays, and overtime.
  • May require a valid California Driver’s License and participation in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Notice System.
  • Subject to a pre-placement medical exam and ongoing medical surveillance in accordance with federal, state, and university policies.
  • Subject to a background check, including criminal history and identity verification.
  • Compliance with UC Davis’ SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) Vaccination Program, including proof of vaccination or an approved exception/deferral.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of custodial procedures and techniques.
  • Ability to determine the appropriate tools and equipment for specific tasks.
  • Experience resolving customer concerns efficiently.

Pay

  • Custodian: $26.28 per hour
  • Senior Custodian: $26.51 per hour

Schedule

  • Varies, with an average of up to 40 hours per week.
  • Variable shift hours, including weekends, holidays, and overtime.
