Temporary Driver License Examiner I

About the role

This temporary position will be assigned to the Department of Transportation. This position is located statewide.

Responsibilities

• Administer eligibility tests, evaluate people applying for classified Driver License, Commercial Driver License, Learners permits and ID cards.
• Confirm applicant's knowledge of NC Motor Vehicle laws, identify road signs, check vision, and observe/evaluate driving skills by riding with the customer in their personal vehicle on a road test in all types of weather.
• Serve as a public advisor to identify any possible health concerns with drivers, advise customers of adjunct service programs available, and ensure applicant data and court ordered information is entered accurately into the internal system for reporting.

• Manage time efficiently to accomplish required tasks.

Requirements

• Possession of a valid North Carolina Driver License.
• No suspensions or revocations within the past 10 years in any state for any motor vehicle-related offense and no more than 5 active points.
• Must attend, complete, and pass certification training, which requires an overnight stay from Monday to Friday for up to 2 weeks or 10 business days.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Skills and Abilities

• Customer service experience with diverse groups.
• Experience providing detailed information to the public.
• Experience working in settings that require interviewing individuals to gather information.
• Working knowledge of DMV policies and procedures.
• Knowledge of basic computer software that includes database programs, Microsoft Office applications, and the ability to quickly adapt to internal systems.
• Work experience typing using a computer keyboard.

Benefits

No leave or retirement benefits offered with this position. Temporary employees who work an annual average of 30 or more hours per week may be eligible for health insurance coverage under the High-Deductible Health Plan (HDHP).

Pay

$20.85 (Based on education and/or years of relevant work experience reflected on the application). Effective July 1, 2025, candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they have the minimum education and experience listed from the class specification.

Schedule

No specific schedule is provided; however, flexibility to travel during the day and overnight on short notice may be required.
