About the Role

Under general direction, the coach leads sports activities for students, including creating game plans, observing practice drills, and explaining safety, rules, and the history of the sport. The coach schedules activities and tournaments, prepares facilities, and coordinates necessary staff for practices and games.

Responsibilities

  • Creates game plans and practice drills to implement during competition.
  • Observes students during practice to detect and correct mistakes.
  • Oversees students during competition and tournaments.
  • Schedules buses, staff, referees, custodial, and cafeteria personnel needed for practices and games.
  • Ensures students are picked up by appropriate individuals.
  • Prepares areas of use (e.g., gym, field).
  • Communicates expectations, status, schedules, and rules of the athletic program to school administration, staff, parents, and students.
  • Holds parent-athlete meetings.
  • Explains and enforces safety rules and regulations.
  • Lectures on the history and purposes of the sport, including scoring methods and equipment use.
  • Demonstrates principles, techniques, and methods of regulating movement to achieve proficiency.
  • Ensures athletes meet grade and school behavior requirements and demonstrate good sportsmanship.
  • Announces and posts tryout information, collects permission slips, and selects and posts team members.
  • Attends meetings with other District coaches and organizes competitions and tournaments.
  • Purchases, maintains, and repairs equipment and uniforms; keeps inventory and records.
  • Holds sports recognition events and distributes awards.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) prior to being hired.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education.
  • One year of teaching experience.
  • Valid Arizona Department of Education Teacher Certificate.

Skills

  • Understanding of early, middle, and adolescent childhood development.
  • Supervising children, including safety and health issues.
  • Developing age-appropriate lessons for children.
  • Instructing children effectively.
  • Identifying safety hazards to children.
  • Understanding rules of the sport.
  • Engaging and encouraging communication with supervisors, staff, students, and parents.

Physical Requirements

  • Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and seeing.
  • Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently.

Working Conditions

The role involves working in environments typical of school athletic programs, including gyms, fields, and outdoor areas.

Pay

Stipend and temporary salary schedule.
