Temporary Animal Control Veterinary Technician
General Information
The City of Ames is seeking a Temporary Registered Veterinary Technician to assist the Animal Control division of the Police Department from July - October 2026. The position is part-time, approximately 25 hours per week, with a flexible schedule. Applications are accepted until the position is filled.
Essential Job Functions
Coordinates and conducts intake animal health care assessments.
Vaccinates, deworms, and provides flea treatments to animals.
Takes and records vital signs.
Administers prescribed medications and immunizations.
Conducts physical assessments for behavior/temperament.
Observes animals for signs of illness, stress, or poor behavior.
Affords first aid and emergency treatment to animals.
Schedules and transports animals off-site for Veterinarian appointments.
Communicates necessary follow-up/discharge instructions or medical information.
Implements microchip implants.
Restrains animals during examinations and laboratory procedures.
Performs minor kennel repairs or reports maintenance needs.
Records and maintains accurate records/logs of animals.
Assists with customer service duties.
Maintains positive, cooperative relationships with co-workers, volunteers, and the public.
Qualifications
Requires an associate degree from an AVMA accredited school of veterinary technology program.
One (1) year of animal shelter or veterinary assistant experience.
Valid driver's license with a safe driving record.
Successful completion of the VTNE and VTSE.
A valid Veterinary Technician license/registration through the Iowa Board of Veterinarian Medicine.
