About the role
Assistant Store Manager supports the Store Manager in the daily business operations of retail/rental locations, supervising, mentoring, and training a staff of 5–14 employees to deliver exceptional guest service.
Responsibilities
- Act as Manager-on-Duty in the absence of the Store Manager
- Maintain Standard Operating Procedures for the location
- Foster a positive team environment
- Operate POS system, including opening/closing procedures and reporting
- Lead daily operations, monitor performance, budget, scheduling, and payroll
- Handle administrative tasks: training, staffing, budgeting, and reporting
- Maintain daily records for performance, sales metrics, inventory control, and equipment rentals (if applicable)
- Train employees on POS operation, product knowledge, guest service, sales techniques, and loss prevention
- Provide excellent customer service and address customer complaints or inquiries
- Monitor team performance, provide feedback, recognition, or corrective action
- Maintain store visual merchandising standards and conditions
- Stay current on product knowledge to support staff
- Manage retail/rental inventory to prevent shrink
- Prepare store retail and rental inventories
- Address staff needs and complaints
- Participate in leadership forums, providing feedback on store performance, training, and continuous improvement
- Support other departments in the Retail/Rental division
- Enforce safety initiatives consistent with company guidelines
- Support Telluride Ski & Golf sustainability initiatives
- Adhere to Telluride Ski & Golf policies and procedures
- Promote, support, and understand all activities and events (on or off mountain)
- Communicate company-wide messages and new information to staff
- Perform related tasks or special projects, including specialty areas like merchandising and rentals
Shoulder Season Responsibilities
- Support seasonal rotation of the store
- Assist other Telluride Sports rental shops in seasonal transitions
- Support other departments in the Retail/Rental division
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Supervise, mentor, and train employees
- Plan, assign, and direct work
- Appraise performance, reward, and discipline employees
- Address staff complaints and resolve problems
- Communicate and assist with weekly staff schedules
Requirements
- At least two years of previous experience in sales or retail (or returning to retail sales within the company)
- Bachelor’s degree in business, fashion, retail management, or equivalent; or four years of retail management experience
- Ability to read, comprehend, and write simple instructions and correspondence
- Ability to present information effectively in one-on-one and small group settings
- Proficiency in basic math: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, rates, ratios, percentages, and interpreting bar graphs
- Ability to apply common sense to carry out detailed written or oral instructions and handle problems with concrete variables
- Knowledge of Retail Point of Sale Systems, Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, internet search engines, basic accounting, and Adobe
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills
- Previous experience managing or supervising employees
- Experience in resort, rental, and retail preferred
- Knowledge of snow-sport product and rental equipment preferred
- Experience in recreation or winter sports industry preferred
- Ability to work unsupervised
- Customer service and sales experience
- Attention to detail and safety consciousness
- Initiative to identify areas for improvement and seek solutions
- Ability to maintain good relationships with internal staff, management, and corporate personnel
- Ability to work in a fast-paced retail and rental environment, multitask, and manage multiple customers
- Flexible schedule, including nights, holidays, weekends, and overtime
Physical Demands
- Regularly required to stand, walk, talk, and hear
- Frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel, and reach with hands and arms
- Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
- Regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with team lifting
- Specific vision abilities: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
Work Environment
- Infrequently exposed to outside weather conditions
Pay
Starting wage: $22.50–$27.00 per hour. Individual compensation dependent on experience and other factors.
