About the role
The Telephone Operator is often the first contact and first impression of the college. Under supervision, the Operator controls an attendant console to relay incoming and outgoing calls, directs calls to proper areas, reports telephone operational issues to management, and performs clerical duties. The Telephone Operator is dedicated to the learning college concepts by developing programs and facilitating activities that promote student success and positive customer relations.
Responsibilities
- Operates telephone system to relay incoming, outgoing, and interoffice calls.
- Assists and helps customers to the fullest extent during low call volumes.
- Answers questions with appropriate information by continuously familiarizing themselves with the college’s personnel, departments, operations, and calendar.
- Directs calls to the proper person or area.
- Responds to questions regarding all telephone-related systems.
- Maintains directory data.
- Contacts supervisor with telephone emergencies, repairs, and directs telephone repair/installers to appropriate locations.
- Distributes, records, programs, and maintains loaner cellular devices.
- Maintains spreadsheets of telephone extensions for new installations and inventory of telephone equipment.
- Creates manuals for users and telephone operators.
- Assists in keeping on-call operators up to date with new college information and compiles packets for training workshops.
- Performs clerical duties, such as maintaining office file systems, processing orders to outside vendors, ordering supplies, picking up and distributing mail, and verifying and typing payment authorizations for invoices.
Requirements
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
- 0-3 months related experience and/or training.
- Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
- Ability to write correspondence.
- Highly effective vocal communication skills.
- Effective interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to maintain composure and remain positive during times of large call volumes.
- Moderate typing and computer skills.
Schedule
Regular hours: Monday through Friday, 1–5 p.m.
Summer hours: Monday through Thursday, 12–5 p.m.
Hours may be adjusted.
Pay
$15.46 per hour
