Under the supervision of a registered nurse, the Unit Secretary performs a variety of clerical and receptionist activities for the unit and hospital. Always works as a team member within the entire facility.

Responsibilities

  • Provides clerical and receptionist duties on unit including accurate order transcription, maintaining medical records according to HIPAA, completes admissions, discharges, and transfer processes.
  • Answers the phone, manages the patient call system, cleans work areas, stocks, and disposes of supply materials to ensure assigned areas are kept clean and adequately supplied.
  • Takes direction from others and follows through in a concise manner to promote efficiency.
  • Communicates using written, verbal, and non-verbal skills when interacting with patients, families, staff, physicians, and ancillary departments.
  • Sets priorities and acts to protect and advance the patient’s best interest.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties outlined in this job description and continually demonstrates competency in performing job duties.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent required.
  • Completion of a medical terminology class preferred.
  • Six months experience as a division secretary preferred, or trained as a medical records or admitting clerk.
  • Effectively reads, writes, and speaks fluent English.
  • Good communication skills, both orally and written, and computer skills needed.
  • Ability to work with others as a team to ensure quality patient care.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and medical terminology knowledge.
  • BLS healthcare certification required within 30 days of hire.

For clinical departments where Dysrhythmia monitoring & interpretation is required: A Basic Dysrhythmia class is required within 30 days of hire, and a passing grade on the Basic Dysrhythmia competency exam after two attempts within two weeks of the class.
