About the Role
This is a dual role that performs the responsibilities of a Unit Secretary and Monitor Tech for the nursing unit. Under the direction of a Registered Nurse, you will provide excellent customer service while delivering clerical and administrative support. The role includes monitoring cardiac rhythms, maintaining supplies, and ensuring a safe, functional environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
Responsibilities
- Unit Secretary
- Performs general reception and other duties at the nurse’s station, including responding to patient calls via intercom or in person.
- Assists patients, families, visitors, and staff in a kind, professional, and efficient manner.
- Provides administrative and clerical support, including data entry, meeting minutes, maintaining bulletin boards, and organizing downtime forms.
- Manages ordering, stocking, and inventory of equipment and supplies in collaboration with the nurse manager, including daily monitoring of supplies, ordering office or special supplies, and maintaining PAR levels.
- Coordinates the maintenance of a safe, clean, and functional physical environment in accordance with regulatory standards.
- Monitors designated patient safety systems for alerts and immediately notifies the appropriate RN.
- Maintains patient records, ensuring charts are current, complete, and thinned as needed according to policies and procedures.
- Monitor Tech
- Observes cardiac monitors and reports any changes in cardiac rhythm per policy.
- Receives reports from the previous shift and documents strips per policy.
- Manages and distributes transmitter boxes, ensuring they are returned to the surveillance center in a timely manner after discontinuation of telemetry monitoring.
- Reports problems regarding poor transmission or telemetry system failures to designated personnel and departments.
- Completes telemetry summary reports per policy guidelines.
- Triages incoming phone calls, provides appropriate information in a calm and concise manner, and logs phone calls.
- Maintains adequate supplies and keeps the monitoring areas and equipment clean and organized.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- No previous experience required; previous experience in a healthcare setting preferred.
- After hire, requires attendance of a formal arrhythmia training class and successful completion of the Prisma Health Arrhythmia exam with a minimum passing score within 2 attempts. Must be completed within 30 days of hire.
- Arrhythmia competencies must be maintained on an annual basis if selected into a monitor tech role.
