Technologist-Surgical I

About the Role

Assists the surgical team during operations and procedures by arranging, inventorying, and maintaining a sterile setup. Passes instruments and supplies as needed, prepares the surgical suite, assists in moving patients, and performs cleaning duties. Provides aid in exposure, hemostasis, and other technical functions to support safe surgeries with optimal patient outcomes. Performs additional duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

• Assists in performing procedures for surgical patients in alignment with established policies and procedures.
• Provides intraoperative care and safely utilizes equipment and supplies based on patient needs.
• Demonstrates technical accountability in all assigned tasks.
• Participates in ongoing educational activities and completes assigned goals.

Requirements

• Holds a current National Certification as a surgical technologist from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).
• OR meets one of the following education/training requirements under TN Code Ann. 68-57-101(a):
  • Completion of a CAAHEP-accredited program in surgical technology.
  • Completion of an appropriate training program for surgical technologists in the armed forces, a CAAHEP-accredited hospital, or a CAAHEP-accredited ambulatory surgical treatment center.
  • Successful completion of the NBSTSA certifying exam for surgical technologists.
  • Grandfathered under TN Code Ann. 68-57-102(a) if employed as a surgical technologist for at least 18 months prior to July 1, 2006, or began training in an accredited program before that date.
• Effective July 1, 2013, Tennessee requires surgical technologists to complete 15 continuing education credits (CEs) annually to remain qualified for employment, unless maintaining an active national CST certification from NBSTSA.
• BLS certification required within 14 days of hire.
• Computer literacy.
