Primary Function

The Field Service Technician II is a developing field technician responsible for independently performing standard electrical testing, maintenance, and commissioning activities on high-voltage substations and power systems. Operating with limited supervision, the FST II manages assigned test procedures, produces detailed technical reports, and begins leading smaller-scope field assignments. The position will be based in our Abilene, TX office and will report to Dashiell’s Field Supervisor.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Independently perform standard electrical testing and commissioning activities on high-voltage substations, switchgear, transformers, circuit breakers, and protective relay systems with limited supervision.
  • Execute a full range of standard test procedures including insulation resistance testing, contact resistance testing, turns ratio testing, power factor testing, hi-pot testing, and circuit breaker timing tests.
  • Perform protective relay testing and calibration on microprocessor-based relay systems (e.g., SEL, ABB, Siemens, GE) using industry-standard test equipment.
  • Perform testing and commissioning of power apparatus including power transformers, current transformers, potential transformers, medium- and high-voltage circuit breakers, and switchgear assemblies.
  • Independently perform testing and maintenance of low-voltage AC/DC systems including station batteries, battery chargers, inverters, DC distribution panels, and AC distribution systems.
  • Perform electrical calculations including transformer turns ratios, power factor corrections, and relay/metering circuit verification.
  • Interpret electrical drawings, schematics, one-line diagrams, and wiring diagrams; redline drawings to reflect field conditions as needed.
  • Understand and apply switching concepts and procedures for high-voltage equipment.
  • Prepare detailed test reports and commissioning documentation with accuracy and completeness; submit reports with minimal revision required.
  • Lead smaller-scope field assignments and task-level work activities, coordinating with field crew members as needed.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior field staff on testing procedures, safety practices, and documentation standards.
  • Communicate project status, technical findings, and any issues to the Field Supervisor and project leadership.
  • Participate in and contribute to Job Safety Task Analyses (JSTAs), safety briefings, and incident reporting.
  • Maintain, calibrate, and manage assigned company test equipment and tools.
  • Perform special projects and complete other duties as assigned or requested.

How You Will Make an Impact

  • Deliver reliable, high-quality testing and commissioning results that keep projects on schedule and meet client expectations.
  • Strengthen project documentation standards by producing thorough, accurate test reports that require minimal revision.
  • Contribute to workforce development by mentoring junior field staff and modeling professional field practices.
  • Support project safety performance through active participation in safety planning and consistent adherence to safety protocols.
  • Enhance project execution efficiency by independently managing assigned test procedures and reducing the need for supervisory oversight.
  • Build client confidence in Dashiell’s field services through professional communication and dependable technical performance.

Minimum Qualifications / Experience

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical Technology, or a related technical field; equivalent field technician experience may be considered in lieu of a degree (2 years for Associate’s, 4 years for Bachelor’s).
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in electrical testing, commissioning, or a related field service role.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in standard high-voltage electrical testing procedures including insulation resistance, contact resistance, turns ratio, power factor, hi-pot, and circuit breaker timing.
  • Working knowledge of protective relay testing and calibration on microprocessor-based systems.
  • Working knowledge of power apparatus testing (transformers, circuit breakers, switchgear) and low-voltage AC/DC station auxiliary systems (batteries, chargers, inverters, distribution panels).
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, schematics, one-line diagrams, and wiring diagrams.
  • Proficiency in performing electrical calculations including transformer ratios, power factor corrections, and relay/metering circuit verification.
  • Strong technical report writing skills with the ability to produce accurate, detailed commissioning documentation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Mathematical proficiency through trigonometry.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interface with supervisors, project teams, and clients.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record; willingness to travel extensively, including overnight stays.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen.
  • TWIC card or ability to obtain one.

Preferred

  • Experience with Doble, Megger, Omicron, or similar test equipment platforms.
  • Prior experience in electric utility T&D construction or industrial commissioning environments.
  • Familiarity with NFPA 70E, IEEE, and ANSI standards applicable to high-voltage testing.
  • Experience leading small-scope field assignments or coordinating task-level work.

Physical Requirements

  • LEVEL 4 – Field Technical (Testing & Commissioning)
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods (up to 8–12 hours).
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders and access elevated work areas.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, and work in confined spaces.
  • Ability to work near energized electrical equipment.
  • Ability to wear required PPE at all times, including hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toe boots, FR clothing, gloves, and hearing protection.
  • Ability to operate company vehicles safely and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to travel frequently, including overnight stays.

Environmental Conditions

  • Regular outdoor work in varying weather conditions including extreme heat, cold, humidity, and wind.
