Technician I, Histology

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Technician I - Histology for our 1st Shift Pathology Services Team in Mattawan, MI. A Technician I – Histology is in training to perform and become proficient in on-boarding skills, procedures, and cooperating in a team environment. The technician is learning basic skills required to conduct a study under close supervision to gain proficiency.

Responsibilities

• Performs aspects of tissue processing (debridement, dissection, cutting, cleaning and disinfection, sizing, assessing).
• Handles packaging and preservation of tissue products (confirmation of sizing, quality, packaging materials, cryopreservation, etc.).
• Prepares testing equipment and assists with preventative maintenance.
• Embeds and/or re-embeds processed tissue in paraffin.
• Performs post-processing decontamination of equipment and the processing room according to current procedures and protocols.
• May prepare and organize written data, printouts, and other documents for pathologist review.
• Ensures good welfare and humane care for all animals through gentle, positive human-animal interactions.
• Trains in on-boarding skills which may include handling tissues and organs, trimming tissues, embedding, measuring organ weights; microtomy, slide preparation, staining; inventory and quality control, and shipping of tissues.
• Collects, documents, reviews, and verifies data on forms or in electronic data capture systems.
• Reviews documentation of functions performed as part of quality control requirements.
• Uses and maintains instrumentation and equipment.
• Learns and knows anatomic terms.
• Receives, tracks, and prepares samples or materials as required for the department.
• Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or General Education Degree (G.E.D.) required.
• Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) or equivalent in a biological science preferred.
• No previous experience required.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities to achieve goals.
• Computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite), including the ability to learn a validated system.
• Ability to maintain a safe working environment by following all safety procedures and protocols.
• Ability to ensure study integrity and fulfill regulatory agencies' requirements by performing activities according to Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), Business Operating Procedures (BOP), and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) rules.
• Ability to work extended hours, including evenings, weekends, extended shifts, and/or extra shifts, sometimes on short notice.
• Ability to work under specific time constraints.
• Must be authorized to work in the United States without a sponsor visa, now or in the future.

Pay

$20 USD/hr.
