About the role

The Fiber Technician position at Breezeline is responsible for maintaining and repairing a GPON/XGS-PON system. Key responsibilities include troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing fiber network impairments, splicing fiber optic cables, and preparing field notes.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair any and all impairments within the fiber network that may affect customers.
  • Contribute to the design of installation/activation of point-to-point CWDM, DWDM systems as needed.
  • Splice fiber optic cables, including both loose-tube and ribbon optic cables.
  • Reconstruct splice cases, including grounding, bonding, isolation, slack storage, and sealing.
  • Maintain splicing records, schematics, and diagrams.
  • Use OTDR, PON meters, Fiber Scopes, or other required test equipment to ensure proper system maintenance.
  • Read and follow instructions and specifications, manage project scopes, and adhere to safety procedures.
  • Prepare field notes, interpret buried and aerial telecom facilities in records, on maps, and in the field, and recommend changes in running lines or construction methodologies.
  • Enter and maintain outside plant records.
  • Participate in permitting and construction processes to support system maintenance and projects.
  • Complete and maintain accurate records including work orders, daily logs, and other necessary paperwork.
  • Clean and maintain assigned equipment and stock assigned vehicles.
  • Absorb and assist with installation, service calls, and escalations as needed.

Requirements

  • One year minimum experience in outside plant construction.
  • Two years minimum experience in fiber optic cable splicing and maintenance.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft applications.
  • Working knowledge and experience with current computerized operations.
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail and make good sound decisions based on information given.
  • Ability to multitask and stay organized under pressure.
  • Valid Driver's License.

Skills

  • Knowledge of fiber PON/XGS-PON design techniques.
  • Experience with fusion splicing both loose tube and ribbon fiber optic cables.
  • Working knowledge and experience with current computerized operations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft applications.
  • Ability to work with clients and/or customer contacts regarding best maintenance and construction practices.

Background, Experience, And Skills

The Fiber Technician position requires background, experience, and skills in each of the following areas: Knowledge of fiber PON/XGS-PON design techniques, experience with fusion splicing both loose tube and ribbon fiber optic cables, working knowledge and experience with current computerized operations, proficiency with Microsoft applications, ability to work with clients and/or customer contacts regarding best maintenance and construction practices, ability to pay close attention to detail and make good sound decisions based on information given, ability to multitask and stay organized under pressure, must hold a valid Driver’s License, one year (minimum) experience in outside plant construction, two years (minimum) experience in fiber optic cable splicing and maintenance, strong computer skills with Microsoft applications, in-depth understanding of technology-based services, products, and networking.

Other Skills And Abilities

  • Ability to accurately measure distances, using tapes or other measuring devices.
  • Ability to adhere to Local, Federal regulations and Company policies.
  • Ability to carry, climb and operate extension ladder, (approx. 32 ft high and 75 pounds).
  • Ability to climb ladders and operate Aerial Lift Equipment rated with a 350lb maximum total load capacity.
  • Ability to differentiate between different sizes and colors of wires.
  • Ability to drive Company vehicle in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Ability to make cable connections in tight spaces by bending, reaching, twisting.
  • Ability to operate appropriate computer or test equipment associated with position.
  • Ability to perform job from high places (i.e., poles and roofs).
  • Ability to prioritize and organize effectively.
  • Ability to use a variety of hand tools.
