About the Role

The Technician – Electrical installs, troubleshoots, repairs, maintains, and upgrades electrical systems and equipment, including high voltage and low voltage circuitry (24V–480V). Ensures tasks are completed safely, on time, and in compliance with codes, regulations, and specifications while adhering to HCS core values.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in "On Call" duty and responds to after-hours calls per the rotational schedule.
  • Troubleshoots electrical issues and recommends solutions.
  • Coordinates with the assistant manager and/or other trades to complete jobs and work orders efficiently.
  • Installs or replaces light bulbs, ballasts, switches, plugs, breakers, and runs new circuits (power distribution) as necessary.
  • Repairs and/or replaces fire alarm system/equipment.
  • Performs electrical elevator repairs.
  • Reads electrical plans and performs take-offs of materials and equipment.
  • Lays out new jobs and plans rewiring of old installations.
  • Identifies types of conduit, bends, runs, and installs them properly.
  • Checks and installs proper candle power of lighting in instructional rooms and other areas.
  • Repairs, replaces, and maintains receptacle circuits and devices; installs new circuits when additional power is required.
  • Installs necessary components (conduit, outlets, breakers, panels, etc.) for upgrades, new machinery, and equipment.
  • Installs and repairs lighting in buildings and exteriors, including athletic field lights, auditorium lights, and parking lot lights.
  • Works at heights of 40+ feet and operates personnel lifts and bucket trucks.
  • Performs general cleaning and maintenance of vehicles, equipment, and tools (e.g., inspections, fluid checks, part replacements, cleaning).
  • Installs control systems for lights, motors, and equipment.
  • Works with low and high voltage systems.
  • Maintains, services, and tests generators and transfer switches.
  • Performs routine and preventive maintenance to ensure ongoing functioning of electrical systems.
  • Documents labor and materials in SchoolDude to track activities and communicate information.
  • Responds to emergency situations during or after hours to resolve immediate safety concerns.
  • Informs personnel about procedures and work order statuses for decision-making and compliance.
  • Operates hand and power equipment (e.g., voltmeters, meg meters, power location equipment, personnel lifts, forklifts, backhoes, trenching machines).
  • Transports tools, equipment, and supplies to job sites.
  • Requests equipment and supplies to maintain inventory and ensure availability.
  • Performs other tasks and responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma required; technical degree preferred.
  • Minimum three years of experience as an Electrician.
  • Commercial/Industrial Electrical Certification or Electrical License preferred.
  • Valid South Carolina driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of standard wire sizes, types, and uses.
  • Knowledge of electrical codes and how to interpret them from books, plans, or online resources.
  • Knowledge of fire alarm systems.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions for job responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of proper manual task execution and safety practices.
  • Ability to use office equipment (e.g., copy machines, multi-line telephones).
  • Proficiency with computers and digital devices for data entry, email, and work orders.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, employees, other departments, and the public.
  • Ability to use, repair, or maintain small/light equipment (e.g., power tools) and medium machinery (e.g., lift equipment, assigned vehicles).
  • Knowledge of standard spacing, measurements, and layout common to the trade.
  • Ability to guide and train other employees.
  • Ability to manage workload and follow up on tasks with minimal direction.
  • Basic arithmetic skills; ability to calculate volume and measure materials precisely.
  • Ability to estimate time and materials for jobs and maintain stock records.
  • Knowledge of proper PPE required for tasks.

Physical Requirements

  • Regularly required to stand, reach, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Frequently lifts or moves up to 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision requirements: close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to focus.
  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods.
  • Manual dexterity for using telephones, data entry, and hand tools.
  • Eye-hand coordination to avoid injury.
  • Physical endurance for lifting tools/equipment and working in standing, climbing, bending, or kneeling positions for long periods.
  • Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels and on the telephone.
  • Ability to speak audibly for clear communication in person and on the telephone.
  • Capable of wearing proper PPE (e.g., eye protection, hearing protection, hand protection, protective clothing, safety shoes).
  • Able to work at various heights using ladders or personnel lifts.
