About the role
The Clinical Laboratory Scientist performs complex laboratory tests on blood, bodily fluids and tissue samples to help diagnose and treat diseases. The role involves analyzing laboratory specimens, reporting results according to protocols, maintaining equipment, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring compliance with safety procedures.
Responsibilities
- Accurately and appropriately tests specimens according to established protocols and procedures.
- Reports test results promptly and accurately.
- Fulfills daily, weekly, monthly, or as-needed maintenance tasks on laboratory instruments and equipment.
- Follows established procedures for quality control and reports discrepancies to supervisors.
- Troubleshoots instrument, equipment, reagent, and specimen issues, notifying supervisors of unresolved problems.
- Complies with universal precautions and safety procedures, including handling blood and body fluids.
- Performs phlebotomy procedures as necessary, following safety guidelines.
- Assists in training new employees and assists Laboratory Assistants.
- Participates in laboratory surveys and inspections, and contributes to policy reviews.
- Supports the laboratory team by assisting with tasks, such as running survey materials, helping with inspections, and processing blood samples.
- May be required to work extended hours and on-call.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology/Clinical Laboratory Science or equivalent.
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist in a licensed and accredited acute care facility.
- Current Clinical Laboratory Scientist license from the State of California Department of Health Services.
