Ophthalmic Technician II, Per Diem

About the role

Family Health Centers of San Diego (FHCSD) is seeking an experienced Ophthalmic Technician II to join our team. With over 55 years of service, FHCSD is one of the largest federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) in the country, operating numerous clinics and facilities across San Diego County. The Ophthalmic Technician II plays a crucial role in supporting optometrists and ophthalmologists by performing various technical and clerical tasks.

Responsibilities

• Answers phones and greets patients in a pleasant and professional manner.
• Calls patients when orders arrive.
• Schedules follow-up appointments and ophthalmologist procedures.
• Contact pharmacy to call in prescriptions.
• Aids patients with frame and lens selection.
• Fills out lab order forms and verifies lab orders and prescriptions.
• Dispenses, adjusts, and repairs eyeglasses.
• Dispenses contact lenses and trains patients on proper insertion, removal, and care.
• Closes patient encounters, provides health education specific to vision and ocular health.
• Completes documentation and patient history for patient visits.
• Performs case history, visual acuity tests, neutralizes glasses before examinations, performs autorefractometry, ancillary testing (Amslers grid, blood pressure, etc.), and completes visual field testing (FDT & automated fields).
• Performs pachymetry, fundus and anterior segment photography, and corneal topography.
• Maintains vision clinic supplies and inventory, including ordering contact lenses, frames, and consumable supplies.
• Maintains eye wash stations, drug and contact lens solution inventories, and monitors expiration dates.
• Instills eye drops as required.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
• Maintains and prepares vision clinic and equipment, including instrument sterilization, opening and closing clinic procedures, and ensuring exam rooms are ready for the next day's appointments.

Requirements

• At least 2 years of experience as an Ophthalmic Technician required.
• Graduation from a course for Optometry Technician or completion of internal training and competencies required.
• High school diploma or GED Equivalent, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Current American Heart Association healthcare provider CPR (BLS), or Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Advanced Trauma Life Support, or Advanced Resuscitation Training required.
