Technical Writer

Job Summary

Creates, develops, plans, writes, and edits operational, instructional, maintenance or test procedures for paper, multimedia, or web-based publication. Conducts interviews with various users and technical staff to gather data for documentation. Researches and translates technical information into manuals and/or web-based documents for nontechnical users and may also document engineering processes and specifications.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Organize material and complete writing assignment according to set standards regarding order, clarity, conciseness, style, and terminology.
• Maintain records and files of work and revisions.
• Edit, standardize, or make changes to material prepared by other writers or establishment personnel.
• Confer with customer representatives, vendors, plant executives, or publisher to establish technical specifications and to determine subject material to be developed for publications.
• Follows standard practices and procedures in analyzing situations or data from which answers can be readily obtained.
• Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action.
• Select photographs, drawings, sketches, diagrams, and charts to illustrate material.
• Observe production, developmental, and experiential activities to determine operating procedure and detail.
• Works on problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors.
• Understands the implications of new information for both current and future problem-solving and decision making.
• Reviews published materials and recommends revisions or changes in scope, format, content, and methods or reproduction and binding.

Qualifications

• Education and/or Experience: Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university in a related discipline and a minimum of 5 years of directly related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write detailed reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
• Mathematical Skills: Basic math skills.
• Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
• Computer Skills: General knowledge of Microsoft Office, Microsoft Access, and Adobe Systems.

Other Essential Duties

• Follows all import/export requirements, consulting with facility import/export personnel as required.

Other Qualifications

• US Citizenship with ability to attain/maintain government security clearance.
• Ability to travel (domestically/internationally) approximately +/- 10%.
