Technical Writer
About the role
The ideal candidate will be responsible for creating comprehensive and user-friendly end-user instruction manuals for our products and services. This role requires a strong understanding of technical concepts and the ability to translate complex information into clear, concise, and accessible documentation for non-technical users. This position can be located at any CGI office in the U.S., with a preferred location in Fairfax, VA; however, a hybrid working model is acceptable.
Responsibilities
- Develop End-User Instruction Manuals: Create, edit, and maintain detailed instruction manuals, user guides, and other documentation for end-users. Ensure that all documentation is clear, concise, and easy to understand for non-technical users.
- Collaborate with Subject Matter Experts: Work closely with product managers, engineers, and other subject matter experts to gather information and understand the technical aspects of our products and services. Translate technical information into user-friendly content.
- Conduct User Research: Conduct research to understand the needs and preferences of end-users. Gather feedback from users to improve the quality and usability of documentation.
- Maintain Consistency and Quality: Ensure consistency in terminology, style, and formatting across all documentation. Adhere to company standards and guidelines for documentation.
- Update and Revise Documentation: Regularly review and update existing documentation to reflect changes in products, services, or user feedback. Ensure that all documentation is up-to-date and accurate.
- Create Visual Aids: Develop visual aids, such as diagrams, screenshots, and illustrations, to enhance the clarity and usability of documentation. Use graphic design tools to create and edit visual content.
- Manage Documentation Projects: Plan, organize, and manage documentation projects to ensure timely delivery. Coordinate with cross-functional teams to meet project deadlines.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Technical Writing, English, Communications, Computer Science, or a related field.
- 3-5 years of experience as a Technical Writer, preferably in the technology or software industry.
- Proven experience in creating end-user instruction manuals and user guides.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to produce high-quality documentation.
- Proficiency in using documentation tools such as Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat, and content management systems.
- Familiarity with graphic design tools such as Adobe Illustrator or Snagit.
- Ability to understand and explain complex technical concepts to non-technical users.
- Strong organizational and project management skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to adapt to changing requirements.
- Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Qualifications
- Experience with HTML, CSS, and basic web design principles (desired).
- Familiarity with Scaled Agile (SAFe) development methodologies (desired).
- Experience in conducting user research and usability testing (desired).

Compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range for this role in the U.S. is $58,000.00 - $123,800.00.
