Technical Staff, Thermal Architect

About the role

Responsible for applied research or advanced engineering in the development of new products, materials, or processes. You will lead technology investigations, perform strategic analysis of industry capabilities, and develop recommendations that influence Dell’s technical product strategy and product definitions. This role involves collaboration with design teams, systems engineering, marketing, suppliers, and business leaders to ensure product leadership in data center thermal architecture.

Responsibilities

  • Drive the architecture of end-to-end solutions from server to data center, including air and liquid-cooled servers, integrated rack solutions, power distribution, and heat rejection.
  • Innovate power-centric solutions for increasingly dense IT environments.
  • Optimize cost, energy efficiency, and performance from IT to the data center.
  • Engage with high-profile AI customers to optimize solutions for their applications and tune systems for maximum performance.
  • Develop solution overviews and validate with engineering teams.
  • Propose BOM/SKUs to meet technical requirements and shape product offerings.
  • Design air, liquid, and other cooling solutions based on data center and customer requirements.
  • Drive hardware design based on customer requirements and infrastructure needs.
  • Address liquid cooling solutions and platform engineering aspects that scale with data center requirements.
  • Define hardware topologies optimized for efficiency and performance for AI workloads.
  • Collaborate with technology partners and suppliers on cutting-edge technology development, including mechanical, thermal, and electrical aspects of system design.
  • Assess customer requirements and develop blueprints, requiring 20%-30% travel.

Requirements

  • Experience collaborating with customers on architectural and design requirements spanning IT systems to data center thermal technologies.
  • Advanced working knowledge of heat transfer and the ability to analyze component/system-level problems and apply advanced cooling technologies.
  • Solid understanding of data center power and thermal management components, including key supplier relationships.
  • Ability to collaborate with Dell’s technology partners and supply base on cutting-edge technology development.
  • Understanding of competitive and business needs, including manufacturing processes, tolerance control for high-volume production, and authoring architecture specifications.
  • Experience interfacing with suppliers to drive research and provide valuable product or service information.
  • Ability to understand business needs while developing technical solutions.

Qualifications

  • 15+ years of related experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Mechanical Engineering with emphasis on thermal science, fluid dynamics, and/or heat transfer for data center implementations (advanced degree may offset years of experience).
