Technical Program Manager, Cloud Databases

About the role

Google's projects, like our users, span the globe and require managers to keep the big picture in focus while being able to dive into the unique engineering challenges we face daily. As a Technical Program Manager at Google, you lead complex, multi-disciplinary engineering projects using your engineering expertise. You plan requirements with internal customers and usher projects through the entire project lifecycle. This includes managing project schedules, identifying risks and clearly communicating them to project stakeholders. You're equally at home explaining your team's analyses and recommendations to executives as you are discussing the technical trade-offs in product development with engineers. Using your extensive technical and leadership expertise, you manage projects of various size and scope, identifying future opportunities, improving processes and driving the technical directions of your programs.

Responsibilities

• Partner across the leadership triad to define program scope, establish milestones, and drive predictable delivery of large-scale database systems.
• Architect and scale software development execution frameworks, metrics, and governance to unblock engineering velocity and operational accuracy.
• Manage complex cross-functional dependencies, technical trade-offs, and critical path risks across globally distributed database engineering teams.
• Drive alignment among executive stakeholders, product managers, and engineering leads through data-driven communication and transparent reporting.
• Identify systemic gaps, optimize product development lifecycles, and foster continuous organizational improvement.
• Lead technical problem-solving for architectural bottlenecks, launch readiness, and multi-team integration hurdles.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 8 years of experience in technical program management or engineering leadership, delivering distributed systems or enterprise infrastructure.

Preferred qualifications

• Experience running large programs and managing teams.
• Technical judgement and understanding of distributed systems.
• Domain expertise in database engines/data platforms (e.g., relational databases, NoSQL, distributed storage, query engines, or managed cloud services like Spanner, AlloyDB, Cloud SQL, Bigtable).
• Track record of operating within a Leadership Triad to influence product roadmaps, drive strategic alignment, and manage complex multi-team dependencies.
• Strong analytical and systems-thinking mindset, with experience designing program metrics, tracking launch readiness, and driving engineering operational excellence.
• Exceptional executive communication and stakeholder management skills, with ability to synthesize technical details into trade-offs, risk assessments, and executive-ready narratives.

US: $192000 - $278000 (USD) + 20% bonus target + equity + benefits
