We are seeking a technical professional to join the Signals Collections and Analysis Group in the Nuclear Nonproliferation Division (NND), National Security Sciences Directorate (NSSD) at ORNL. This role supports custom electrical design and instrumentation control activities to advance nuclear nonproliferation objectives, including hardware and software development for electrical instrumentation and controls engineering (EI&C).

About the role

The successful candidate will be a highly motivated and creative problem solver, comfortable addressing complex electrical sensing and power distribution challenges to produce customized solutions for a one-of-a-kind facility. The NSSD at ORNL leads groundbreaking research in nuclear nonproliferation, data analytics, cybersecurity, and high-performance computing to support national security missions.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary specialists to translate facility needs into conceptual electrical solutions for nonproliferation objectives.
  • Lead the design, fabrication, and testing of custom electrical assemblies, including circuit design, component selection, layout, and performance validation.
  • Provide guidance on electrical assembly installation, operation, and troubleshooting to ensure operational excellence.
  • Maintain technical documentation of completed assemblies for long-term maintenance and training.
  • Evaluate and select instrumentation control systems that meet project requirements, ensuring compliance with electrical codes, safety, reliability, and reproducibility.
  • Represent the team in conceptual design reviews to align work with broader project objectives.
  • Work independently and in team settings to complete objectives on time and within scope.

Requirements

  • BS degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in electrical system design and integration.
  • Knowledge of electrical circuits, microprocessors, and embedded systems.
  • Understanding of industrial sensing technologies, including selection, design, and installation.
  • Proficiency in electrical design software (e.g., SPICE, AutoCAD Electrical, SolidWorks Electrical) for analog and power electronics.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development, including training and conference attendance.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate complex concepts for diverse audiences.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MS degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field, with 3+ years of experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in electrical system design and integration of circuits, microprocessors, and embedded systems.
  • Expertise in industrial sensing technologies, including independent procurement and integration.
  • Experience with industrial networking solutions for instrument control and communications.
  • Experience in custom electrical assembly construction, from design through fabrication to installation.
  • Ability to work independently and creatively in collaborative teams within a complex research environment.

Special Requirements

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) clearance from the Department of Energy. As a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position, it requires passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in ongoing random drug testing. You may also be subject to random polygraph testing. Visa sponsorship is not available. A Real ID-compliant form of identification and successful completion of a Federal Tier 1 background check are required.
