About the role
The Technical Laboratory Coordinator serves as a student educator and supervisor for the mechanical engineering department in the mechanical engineering machine shop and rapid prototyping studio. This position instructs and supervises mechanical engineering students on the safe use of equipment and provides fabrication assistance to staff, faculty, and students. The role focuses on face-to-face education and supervision of students and operates primarily during evenings and weekend hours.
Responsibilities
- Leads training sessions for mechanical engineering students on manual shop equipment, CNC machines, and related software.
- Provides technical assistance and instructional support to students, staff, and faculty in the machine shop and rapid prototyping studio.
- Performs semi-complex jobs of a mechanical nature, manufacturing parts from steel, aluminum, or other materials from drawings, prints, or verbal instruction to required tolerances.
- Manufactures parts consisting of gears, threads, shafts, adaptors, jigs, and fixtures to very close tolerances.
- Provides support to laboratories and performs necessary maintenance on lab equipment.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Three years of related experience in laboratory operations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Five years of related experience.
Skills
- Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.
- Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
- Ability to perform mathematical computations.
- Ability to read engineering drawings and sketches.
- Willingness to work primarily during evenings and weekend hours.
- Ability to work with college-age students and demonstrate patience and empathy for untrained individuals.
