Technical Lab Assistant

About the role

Performs laboratory testing and support services across the major areas of the laboratory. Performs moderate to high complexity laboratory procedures, as defined by CLIA, according to standard operating procedures. This testing requires the limited exercise of independent judgment and interpretation and is performed under the supervision of a medical technologist or department supervisor.

Responsibilities

  • Perform phlebotomy and specimen processing as necessary.
  • Follow established procedures for collecting and processing biological specimens for analysis.
  • Perform moderate complexity or waived tests, as assigned.
  • Recognize abnormal results and follow up as defined in standard operating procedures.
  • Operate instruments as assigned.
  • Recognize equipment malfunctions and notify appropriate technical personnel.
  • Perform routine quality control and maintain accurate records.
  • Recognize out-of-control results and notify technical personnel.
  • Recognize factors that affect measurements and results and take appropriate action according to predetermined protocols.
  • Assist in the training of new caregivers and students.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma Required or equivalent
  • Associate Degree Preferred or Bachelor of Science Preferred
  • Clinical Laboratory experience preferred
  • Phlebotomy training or experience preferred for all critical access locations

Skills

  • Working knowledge of specimen collection, preparation, and test requirements and factors affecting test interpretation in responding to inquiries (Required)
  • Good written and verbal communication skills (Required)
  • Mathematical ability to calculate fractions, percentages, ratios, proportion measurements and apply practical algebra (Required)
  • General understanding of laboratory equipment to calibrate and do minor repairs (Required)

Working Conditions

  • Ability to move around area with occasional sitting.
  • Fine motor skills to be able to grasp and control medical equipment, frequently.
  • Lift/Carry: Frequently up to 5 lbs.
  • Push/Pull: Frequently up to 10 lbs. force.
  • Reaching frequently.
  • Squat/kneel occasionally.
  • Exposure to biohazard, body fluids and airborne particles.
  • Exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • Ability to communicate and exchange accurate information.
  • The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform activities such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.

Pay

The salary range for this job opening at PeaceHealth is $22.21 – $33.31. The hiring rate is dependent upon several factors, including but not limited to education, training, work experience, terms of any applicable collective bargaining agreement, seniority, etc.
