Lab Assistant

Job Description

The Laboratory Assistant performs four essential roles in the function of the Laboratory: Lab Customer Service, Phlebotomist, Lab Order Entry including handling of patient information and test results, Specimen Processing and Shipment of samples to Reference Labs.

• Provides Exceptional Customer Service to all stakeholders in a manner that supports the mission, vision and values of the Laboratory and UVMHN.
• Obtains specimens for testing according to policies, procedures and regulatory requirements.
• Processes specimens prior to testing, ensuring quality and adhering to established policies and procedures.
• Works collaboratively with coworkers, Technologists and other staff within department and in other departments throughout the Organization.
• Uses a variety of communication skills to meet the needs of the laboratory department and the customers served by the laboratory.
• Participates in continuing education and departmental development functions to support professional growth and departmental initiatives.

Shift Details

Shifts vary from 3 hours in length to 6 hours.

Qualifications

• Able to read, write and speak the English language.
• A High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Phlebotomy Certification from a nationally recognized agency is highly recommended.
• Phlebotomy Experience is a plus.
• Computer entry or word processing skills required.
• Working knowledge of medical terminology desirable.
• Good interpersonal communication skills required.

Approximately six months to a year is required to learn the job for satisfactory performance. The Laboratory Director will evaluate this.
