Job Description
The Laboratory Assistant performs four essential roles in the function of the Laboratory: Lab Customer Service, Phlebotomist, Lab Order Entry including handling of patient information and test results, Specimen Processing and Shipment of samples to Reference Labs.
- Provides Exceptional Customer Service to all stakeholders in a manner that supports the mission, vision and values of the Laboratory and UVMHN.
- Obtains specimens for testing according to policies, procedures and regulatory requirements.
- Processes specimens prior to testing, ensuring quality and adhering to established policies and procedures.
- Works collaboratively with coworkers, Technologists and other staff within department and in other departments throughout the Organization.
- Uses a variety of communication skills to meet the needs of the laboratory department and the customers served by the laboratory.
- Participates in continuing education and departmental development functions to support professional growth and departmental initiatives.
Shift Details
Shifts vary from 3 hours in length to 6 hours.
Qualifications
- Able to read, write and speak the English language.
- A High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Phlebotomy Certification from a nationally recognized agency is highly recommended.
- Phlebotomy Experience is a plus.
- Computer entry or word processing skills required.
- Working knowledge of medical terminology desirable.
- Good interpersonal communication skills required.
Approximately six months to a year is required to learn the job for satisfactory performance. The Laboratory Director will evaluate this.
