About the role

The Technical Designer IV functions as project leader in directing Technical Design work on a single contract or project. This individual serves as the interface between various engineering departments and Project Management, working closely with engineers, proposal managers, project managers, project engineers, and shop personnel. The role oversees the work of the Technical Design project team, ensuring schedules, quality, and budgeted hours are met.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize 2D and 3D CAD technology (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, E3D) to prepare basic arrangement drawings, 3D models, and assembly/details for component parts.
  • Calculate expansion movements, clearances for equipment and heating surfaces, secondary supports, stiffeners, sootblower pipe design, and pressure part calculations (PVD program).
  • Translate and apply design requirements from CAD databases, contract information sheets, customer specifications, proposal drawings, P&IDs, flow diagrams, and other data into product design or details.
  • Determine appropriate views, sections, and orientations for drawings to convey necessary information effectively.
  • Develop raw material requirements for Procurement orders, including pressure and non-pressure parts for purchasing and fabrication.
  • Perform checking functions on all types of drawings, verifying compliance with design specifications, company standards, and industry standards (e.g., dimensions, fits, tolerances).
  • Review and comment on engineering schedules and attend weekly status meetings.
  • Assist team members with problems when the supervisor is unavailable.
  • Determine boiler field weld locations for all pressure parts and develop plant arrangements to guide Customer A/E in placing building structures and equipment beyond the company’s scope.
  • Solve structural and arrangement problems for complex projects using experience and creativity, maintaining close contact with engineers and estimators to develop economical designs.
  • Assist Project Engineers/Project Managers in reviewing and selecting auxiliary vendor equipment and comment on vendor drawings per contract requirements.
  • Contribute to FOAK (First of a Kind) development by creating design sketches and layouts to establish company standards.
  • Assign and monitor drawing tasks for Tech Designers, ensuring schedule adherence and assisting in training new personnel.
  • Serve as field liaison engineer during project construction and oversee offshore engineering to meet quality and schedule metrics as a lead Tech Design resource.
  • Act as the lead resource for executing work assigned to the offshore/global Tech Design team.
  • Travel domestically and internationally to perform 3D model reviews/presentations with customers, conduct shop or job site visits, and perform equipment walk-downs for field measurements and site-specific requirements.
  • Perform all other assigned duties.

Requirements

  • 2-year associate’s or technical degree in drafting/design.
  • 8+ years of experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of company and industry standards and procedures.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks or other 3D CAD packages is preferred.
