About the role

As a Sleep Lab Tech, you will perform comprehensive sleep testing and analysis, along with associated interventions under the general supervision of the Medical Director and/or Cardiopulmonary Supervisor or designee. You will compile data into reports for physician review.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately apply appropriate sensors and monitoring devices to the patient according to laboratory standards.
  • Ensure electrode impedances meet laboratory standards.
  • Write a comprehensive patient history, gathering appropriate information from the patient, patient’s record, and family members regarding sleep disturbances.
  • Explain test procedure(s) to the patient and family members present.
  • Perform polysomnograms (PSG) according to laboratory standards, including PSG with and without continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or bi-directional positive airway pressure (BiPAP), multiple sleep latency test, and split-night PSG.
  • Determine and initiate appropriate treatment modalities/interventions per physician order/protocol.
  • Recognize artifact (patient or environmental), document, eliminate, or take proper measures to monitor the artifact.
  • Facilitate high-quality recording while supporting routine and emergency patient needs.
  • Observe, monitor, and document all pertinent data on the patient’s medical record before, during, and after the polysomnogram procedure according to laboratory standards.
  • Identify normal/abnormal wake-sleep patterns and clinical events.
  • Tabulate and analyze wake-sleep clinical event data.
  • Generate an analysis summary to accurately reflect recorded and scored data.
  • Assist the Cardiopulmonary Services Director in the development and ongoing review of policies, procedures, and protocols for the Sleep Laboratory.
  • Assist in providing public awareness education.
  • Share knowledge, skills, and contributions willingly with associates.
  • Maintain current knowledge and competence through educational activities.
  • Seek clinical/technical experience relevant to role responsibilities.
  • Apply knowledge of basic infection control standards relating to patients and equipment, including electrodes.
  • Keep equipment clean and in proper working order, including appropriate calibrations and troubleshooting.
  • Demonstrate positive interpersonal skills with patients, patient families, lab staff, and other healthcare team members.
  • Consult with various healthcare providers in a timely manner and suggest appropriate referrals to ensure continuity of care.
  • Apply working knowledge of techniques and treatment modalities for patients of varying ages from adolescent through geriatric.
  • Provide effective education to patients and their families.

Requirements

  • High school graduate.
  • Successful completion of an AMA-approved school for Respiratory Care, EEG, or related health sciences program with an emphasis in sleep technology.
  • Minimum of 6 months experience performing sleep studies and CPAP/BiPAP titration preferred.

Qualifications

  • Non-respiratory care practitioners must show successful completion of A-STEP.
  • Respiratory Care Practitioners (RCP) must hold a current South Carolina Respiratory Care Practitioner License.
  • RPSGT, CPSGT, or SDS credential preferred within 2 years of hire.
  • BLS certification by the AHA required.
