QUALIFICATIONS
- Required: Must have a High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (G.E.D.).
- Preferred: College courses in subjects such as anatomy and physiology, biology, and chemistry.
- Self-motivated with strong critical thinking skills, the ability to think independently, and works effectively in a team environment.
- Lic/Reg/Cert: Hold a nationally recognized Phlebotomy certification.
Technical
- Provides technical, operational and clerical support to Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, Microbiology and Processing.
- Affords assistance with pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical test processes, documentation and processing of lab results relative to the diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of disease.
- Runs waived and non-waived tests according to laboratory policies.
- Begins duties immediately upon reporting to work.
- Maintains adequate inventory of supplies for areas worked, communicates shortages to appropriate coordinator.
- Learns new procedures and assignments in a reasonable time frame.
- Maintains a clean and orderly work environment.
Specimen Processing
- Triages incoming specimens, accesses, labels and distributes specimen appropriately.
- Maintains specimen integrity to ensure quality test results.
- Performs all data entry for specimen identification and accessioning.
- Organizes workload and correctly prioritizes orders for collection giving proper urgency to STAT requests.
- Runs outstanding reports to locate specimens.
- Batches and packages specimens for reference laboratory testing.
- Provides troubleshooting for order issues, specimen collections and rejection protocols.
Phlebotomy
- Performs phlebotomy services for the hospital or off-site locations.
- Performs venipunctures, heel punctures and capillary sticks using specified techniques that assure both patient and employee safety.
- Collects other laboratory specimens as designated by procedure.
Quality Control Procedures
- Adheres to laboratory quality control policies, documents all QC activities, temperatures, specimen log sheets and maintenance performed.
- Follows protocols for running controls.
- Notifies coordinator of occurrences.
Customer Service
- Thanks customers for their support and business;
- Demonstrates appreciation.
- Provides prompt, courteous service to both inpatients and outpatients in a manner that promotes customer satisfaction.
- Actively listens to the customer and follows through or seeks authorized personnel to assist.
