Team Sports Leader (Basketball Scorekeeper)
About the role
The Team Sports Leader performs a variety of tasks that support the youth and adult sports leagues offered by the City of Pocatello. This position may involve keeping score manually or electronically for basketball, volleyball, and softball games, assisting with the setup and takedown of facilities, organizing the scorekeeping area, or monitoring activities during events. The Leader provides guidance and direction to participants and attendees to ensure a safe and positive experience and may be required to travel to surrounding communities to score or timekeep.
Applicants must be 16 years of age or older and successfully complete a background check. The role requires excellent customer service, interpersonal, and organizational skills, as well as the ability to maintain collaborative working relationships with officials, employees, organizations, and the public.
The work environment includes indoor and outdoor conditions, exposure to wet, humid, dusty, or odorous environments, and potential exposure to chemical hazards.
Responsibilities
- Act as a Softball, Basketball, or Volleyball referee or scorekeeper.
- Keep time for games/matches using an electronic scoreboard.
- Record team rosters into the scorebook and maintain accurate game/match accounts.
- Document any accidents or incidents that occur during the game/match.
- Clean up trash in the scorekeeper/timer area before leaving the gym/field.
- Record and report daily scores to the Team Sports Office in a timely manner.
- Keep time for timeouts and communicate with game officials when time has expired.
- Maintain accurate records of player time as prescribed by the rules.
- Provide all participants and spectators with a safe, friendly, and positive game experience.
- Oversee and ensure the safety of the assigned gymnasium facility.
- Provide excellent customer service, communicate program information, and engage with customers to build relationships.
- Assist scorekeepers by locating coaches and directing them to fill out scorebooks 15 minutes prior to game start.
- Conduct hallway inspections, walk-throughs, bathroom inspections, and sweep/mop gym floors as needed.
- Immediately communicate issues, concerns, and accidents to the Team Sports Program Manager.
Requirements
- Must be 16 years of age or older.
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Knowledge of rules and regulations of basketball, volleyball, and/or softball.
- Experience participating in the named sport preferred.
- CPR and/or Basic First Aid Certification preferred.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Physical Requirements
- Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces.
- Requires hand/finger dexterity to handle materials, manipulate tools, operate a computer, and reach with hands and arms.
- Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with assistance.
- Requires sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform essential functions and interact with the public.

Schedule
Works days, evenings, and weekends as required.
