Teaching Veterinarian

The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking passionate teaching veterinarians with exceptional medical, surgical, dental, and business skills for an open Practice Track faculty position in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences at the Frank Stanton Veterinary Spectrum of Care Clinic.

About the Role

The successful candidate will practice and teach veterinary students in the College’s Frank Stanton Veterinary Spectrum of Care (SOC) Clinic in a full-time or part-time practice track faculty position. They will coach final-year students as they lead veterinary care for patients and engage with clients from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. Students learn multiple approaches to patient management, diagnostic techniques, treatments, clinical procedures, communication skills, practice management, and business.

The clinic is a stand-alone, state-of-the-art private practice setting adjacent to the university’s tertiary care veterinary medical center. It features advanced technologies for surgery, dentistry, in-house lab work, and imaging.

In addition to final-year students, pre-clinical students also attend shifts in the clinic to practice clinical and communication skills under coaching oversight. Successful candidates will help students from all years develop confidence and competence before entering practice.

Impact

Approximately 70% of Ohio State’s College of Veterinary Medicine graduates enter general private practice. The Frank Stanton Veterinary Spectrum of Care Clinic addresses affordability challenges by training students to provide evidence-based care that considers client expectations and financial limitations. This prepares students to serve an economically diverse clientele and contribute immediately to their practices and communities.

Responsibilities

• Clinical teaching of professional students in the Spectrum of Care Rotation, including diagnosis and treatment of patients.
• All aspects of patient care in a busy small animal general practice:

• Model and promote collegiality, professional citizenship, and collaboration to foster an excellent workplace atmosphere.
• Adhere to external, university, college, and department policies, procedures, and guidelines.

Requirements

Required:

• DVM or equivalent
• A minimum of five years’ clinical experience in a high-quality small animal primary care practice

• Genuine dedication to student educational success
• Understanding of skills necessary for confident entry into veterinary general practice
• Proven track record as a general practitioner practicing Spectrum of Care medicine
• Belief in the importance of spectrum of care, offering options responsive to client beliefs, values, financial limitations, and expectations
• Broad expertise in wellness, preventive medicine, diagnosis and management of diseases in dogs and cats, including dentistry, general surgery, and hospital-based care
• Experience managing a high-paced clinical caseload and multitasking
• Outstanding communication skills
• Demonstrated commitment to teaching, mentoring, or coaching
